Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

A dry and chilly afternoon.
As one would expect, Mow has moved to second most senior. Henry now lets her eat with him and Fret. Tull and Sylph are not entitled to eat with the adults and Henry isn't impressed that I give them a portion of any treats.
I'm wondering if Tull and Sylph will lay over the winter. Niether are showing any signs of getting ready to lay yet.

Sylph pre perch roosting on my shoulder. While this was understandable a couple of weeks ago they can both go into the coop without much in the way of harrassment from the seniors when the seniors go in. A couple of weeks it was wait outside until the seniors got settled. She does a better job of keeping my ears warm than my cap!

Nothing like a nice warm chicken on a chilly day. It is turning cold here and I warmed my hands in Tassels’ abundant fluff while carrying her far from the coop to get her to wake up and eat, drink and bathe before returning to her nest for her 4th week of being broody.

Getting to handle the hens is one advantage of most broodies. Some are complete monsters when getting them off the nest. I needed gloves when removing Where and an unnamed bantam who died shortly after I started in Spain was even worse.

Yes. Tassels is a good natured broody (though her language is not for polite company). Calypso is a whole different thing. I had to use long leather gauntlets and safety goggles. She would fly out in attack mode. Fortunately she had only gone broody once. With Tassels it is her primary state of being.
Here she is on the break I imposed on her.

So far my broodies have been sweeties. Morinth especially will make herself comfortable in my arms when I pull her off the nest.
Black and Ini mini are my two champions in being sweet broodies. They are still sort of nursing the juveniles (hatched mid June) . :idunno
I suppose 16 weeks is exceptional even for Dutch bantams.

Family bath:

I used three broodies this year. I don't know if it was the breeds or personality but they all were okay with me checking eggs and chicks. I got a few pecks that didn't hurt, some verbal complaints. When I picked up a chick and it was cheeping I would get some ankle pecks, but again, not painful.

Zacchaeus was raised by adult hens and minds his manners. They finally accepted his advances, but he had been tidbitting them for weeks before it paid off! ;)

No broodies, just the pullets. Not laying yet.

And Silas, their hatch mate. They're all 4 1/2 months old.
