Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

I had 16 chicks hatch this spring. 4 pullets , a dz cockerels
have you noticed a pattern with gender and season? LaFleche and I both get more males : females with spring hatches, and vice versa with summer hatches.
Caught 5 cockerels going around ganging up
That sounds unpleasant. Did they do better as dinner?

This was the crisis point between father Cillin (red rooster) and son Treacle when Treacle was around 18 months old.
Cillin had been rather hard on Treacle as fathers go. They had fought a few times before with Treacle backing down.
Cillin had his favourites and Treacle didn't bother them. There were two hens that had shown an interest in being Treacles hens rather than Cillin's, the two hens were Moon and Fudge. Fudge is the hen in the pictures below.
This was the point at which Fudge showed an obvious preference for Treacle but Cillin wasn't prepared to let her go. Yet another coop might have solved this problem and avoided the rift between father and son that developed after this fight.

The next fight Cillin lost and Treacle became the senior rooster and drove his father Cillin out of the tribes coop. He lived with me for a few weeks until I built him a small coop of his own.
what happened to Cillin after that?

I have no idea what's for the best for ex-doms, and only experience of 2 so far (and one of them ill), so it would be good to get better informed before Killay's time comes. You must have seen quite a few through this difficult chapter in their lives, and I would very much appreciate it if you would share your knowledge. Or point me to where you've shared it already, if appropriate. Many thanks.

Happy Thanksgiving!

what happened to Cillin after that?
He moved in with me for a couple of months. For a few days he tried to get into the tribes coop at dusk. Treacle wasn't having any of it and adopted a zero tolerance of Cillin being anywhere near the tribe. For the first few days I tried to encourage him to keep with the tribe but I would find him late evening on his own hanging around outside the main coop. He came back to my house eventually and after getting fed he got into the house nest box which of course he was very familar with and roosted there. I used to let him out in the morning and he would come home looking depressed late evening. There were lots of complicating circumstances. I was very sad having brought Cillin up after his mother got killed while he was young. I built him his own coop eventually. He knew it was for him and the day I finished it he moved in. I left Catalonia shortly after. There are pictures and some of the story on By Bobs thread but I have no idea where.

With hindsight I should have started my own thread when I joined BYC, but I didn't and I've pictures and stories spread all over the site and no real idea of what's where.

For the first five years of living in Catalonia I didn't have a camera, wasn't on BYC and only have written notes. A lot can happen in five years. I didn't have a camera when I worked on the free range farm, nor when I worked on my uncles farm.

What you may find interesting is this.
