Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Not to back up Shad saying cats are bad, but the cat next door heard I am allergic to his dander and proceeded to rub his head and tail on me. I asked him nicely to stop but he didn't care.

Cats. Ugh. I love them and I dislike them, all at the same time.
Yes that is very 'cat'. They can tell who doesn't like them for whatever reason and make a point of getting close to them.

He knows I like him.

I think he was hungry. He's the next door cat that isn't being fed since its owner died. I (with the help of Mom supplying the food), have been sneaking it food. It knows who I am, and it likes to rub it in.

My pomeranian has killed a few small animals, he grabs and shakes, breaking their necks. I had a miniature pinscher that had such a crushing bite that her catches tended to...pop for lack of a better word.

As tax, here is lovely Mr. Marble. He has lice, I will begin treating him and the coop tomorrow when I am able to get the spray that was recommended to me.

His elderly roommate Buffy is in the back. They seem to like each other, but do not care for all the cold wind we've been having!

Tax payment that I’d much rather not be making.

Today one of the senior hens in the Tsouloufati group was dead in the nest box. Seemingly fine last night. Haven’t had a nest box death since having a group full of ISA browns. She sleeps in the nest boxes, so I’m not convinced it’s reproductive health-related.

She wasn’t a particularly old hen, nearing 5, if I’m not mistaken. Thankfully (if there’s something to be thankful for in this situation), she wasn’t not head hen, so her loss in not completely devastating to the group, or KolovosView attachment 4082457A few throwback photos of her; she was not one to enjoy the spotlight, both from people and other birds

Sorry for the loss of your beautiful Tsouloufati. :hugs

If one of my hens is hurt or really unwell, she sleeps on the ground or in a nest box. Maybe something was wrong last night when she didn’t went up roost.

They gravitate to standoffish people, like those with cat allergies. :p

Two hours today. Warmish till dusk. It's still chilly at night but then this is the UK where balmy evenings are restricted to a couple of weeks in the year.
Henry is no better or worse. The massaging seems to help, perhaps because as he fills his crop it puts pressure on the tumour, if that's what the lump is. He's still eating and drinking and keen to see what I've brought as treats which he eats with some enthusiasm.
Got J coming at the weekend so we can do a major tour and treatment of everyones legs. I would like her to learn how to pick up and hold the chickens, often something people unfamiliar with chickens find a bit daunting.
Everybody got out on to the field and Henry did a little bug and plant hunting.

Apologies for not clarifying. Her sleeping in the nest box was not abnormal behaviour for her.

In fact, I can’t think of one night in the last three years that she hasn’t slept either in the nest, or perched on the side.

If it were any other senior hen, a nighttime nesting box death would have alarmed me more. For now I’m leaning towards “natural causes”, possibly something heart-related. Unfortunately, I will never know.

Thank you everyone. I wasn’t expecting a senior hen death this early, but sometimes life has different plans. I hope that she has passed on her genes to some of the newer generations
