Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Yesterday I got a text and a couple photos while I was at work, someone's chicken was wandering around the yard.

I got home after dark, didn't see it, but as I was bringing my house plants inside I noticed something moving on the box/compost pile. It was a full size chicken, "nesting" in a box.

It might belong to the guy who lives behind me. If it's still hanging around this afternoon I'll walk over, see if he's home.
Time of year when young are harassed here.

I doubt it’s the time of the year.

The first years I had chickens and chicks, the adults were okay with the newcomers, roosting in ‘their’ territory. It changed about 5 years later after I gave away Janice’s brothers and she was left alone at 12- 14 weeks old. Some of the flock members immediately started to harass Janice, and she started to sleep alone in the nestbox of the old tiny coop. Out of sight of the bullies.

After Janice, more chicks were harassed when they started to roost/turned into juveniles. Only once when Pearl and Black hatched 3 bantam RIR, the oldies allowed these 3 on the roost when they were ready for it.

More likely (my experience) the harassment is a territory, age or space thing. What is your experience / what do you all think?

We got a second hit today, and with overnight lows of 22°, I doubt I’ll make my morning class. Def have more on the ground now than this morning, plus the ground is much colder.
I have to say that sitting in a recliner with a second cup of coffee sure beats dealing with (other) idiots on the interstate, not to mention the up hill and down dale hike from commuter parking to my 8:15 class.

I’ll be at the afternoon lab, though. More snake-handling!

View out the front door. Not bad, but no point in heading out for a 75-minute class, just to turn around and head back home.

Beautiful but hostile.
I'd call it invigorating. Makes you feel alive and so happy you're almost high.

THIS is hostile. And miserable and soul-destroying and not even nice to look at.

It crowed this morning. And it's big.

when would you expect to get snow in each of your locations?
Dustings possible in September. Measurable (3 inches/a handspan) 1-2 weeks before Halloween, usually gone by Halloween, but not guaranteed. Off and on from Halloween through April with chance in May. Been known to see snow somewhere in the state on/around July 4 and have seen a 6 inch blanketing the entire state the first weekend in August. Winter emergency travel kit stays in vehicles year round. Snow mid May-mid Sept is unusual, but not unheard of. 2018 had snow falling somewhere in the state every month of the year. (The may-sept stuff melts off within 24 hours and isn't worth putting boots on for unless a freak storm dumps more than a dusting).

Whew! Where again are you? Every now and again I figure this out, and then it’s gone.

I always admire the beautiful views and striking skies in your photos.
Now I am happily not envious at all!
We had about 30mins of snow flurries this morning and it is cold, but I don't even need to plan for snow for a month.
In 2011 there was a freak Halloween storm with about 3' of snow (if memory serves) but that was so unusual people still talk about it as a moment to remember just like Hurricane Sandy (the following year). Where were you during Snowtober .....
I was up all night beating snow off branches so the trees, still fully in leaf, didn't crack under the weight. There was a lot of damage from that storm and several fatalities. I mainly escaped unscathed (but very tired).
