Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Some decided to go out into the snow today, 41f , which is normal temperature. They have been in since the end of November.
It's been below freezing during the day. Some days it was 10 f for the high.

Exploring a chicken tractor... not in use, but a bowl of feed was in there .

Holy cow, he’s HUGE!

And meanwhile, TIL (today I learned) that apparently the way to a hen’s heart is through her stomach. 😉
Only LORD JESUS is Holy!

That rooster is big and pretty. All of our hens LOVE to eat..if you have treats you have made friends that will follow you everywhere you go in their area!

Rain, drizzle, rain, drizzle, it went on all afternoon and it's still at it now. 40mph wind gusts meant there was no way the chickens were going out on to the field. Having seen the forecast I left late and spent an hour and a half at the field.

Dutch is a very friendly cockerel. I've been giving him crop rubs and he enjoys them. Of course, now he wants one whenever I'm in sight. Really hoping he keeps this friendly nature and doesn't go for the kid or dog. This batch has several boys that tolerate touching, which is a first for me. I do not touch the hens at all, I'd rather not confuse anyone. I am the lady that provides buckets of nice things. I'm grateful, all of these boys have seen kiddo in her winter coat, and saw me butcher the two cockerels that chose to attack her. They have decided tbat the bucket kid is okay even in a winter coat.

Kiddo got to christmas shop for her chickens, she chose one of these for each flock. I'm allergic to cinnamon but they smell very festive (in between sneezes!)

I recently started this with Glais; he doesn't enjoy them yet.
He sees me crop test Mow and Sylph at night on the roost and this has made him less nervous of me doing it. I've gone from a quick feel to a bit of a stroke (that reads rather badly:p) and he's slowly getting used to it.

I'll be taking a Christmas dinner for the chickens as usual, not quite sure what yet.

Those wattles on Glais are really quite something.
I think Mr. Chips has a way to go! He is however doing a good job at crowing, he always calls the ladies over for food he finds in my hand and even shares some of it, and he has started to try ‘herding’ (or whatever we think the wing drop thing is). Trouble is not everyone pays attention to him and he still jumps Piglet with absolutely no warning.
