Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

I don't see that that's necessarily a problem. Maps don't usually include "the" in the name of somewhere, even when it would be used in speech or writing (the North Sea, the Hebrides etc)
I had no idea what you and @Mother of Chaos were talking about so I consulted my trusty atlas. It is happily resistant to being hacked, and immune to any name changes since 2001. Somewhere I have a much older one I could consult.
Seems unequivocal.
Also makes sense as the general location is Orkney Is which is made up of Mainland and proximate islands.
Never knew that until just now, even though my Dad was posted to Orkney in WWII in some kind of precursor of radar outfit.

Orkney tax: Multiple times a day Mr. Chips inspects the nest boxes and calls for Geronimo.

Then he stands outside and waits while she examines every piece of bedding. Sometimes he gets bored and crows while he is outside and they chat to each other. 🥰
She rarely stays in there long and so far no sign of an egg.

I wonder when the youngsters will rediscover books. They are so much easier and quicker to use if you know where to look (like riding a bike then maybe), and they are reliable. They may be obsolete, but at least several critical people had eyes and opinions on it before anything got published. Nowadays any old tripe gets published online on one or another platform (which = in deed, if not in law, publisher).

There is just something about the thought of besotted chickens! 🥰🥰🥰

Plus being able to make notes in the margins! (Of one’s own books, of course.)

I guess you haven't witnessed them pairing off - you'll need a roo for that of course. It always makes me smile to see a couple gone off for a little promenade, or dustbath, on their own, away from the rest. This was Ystrad and Fforest doing such back in April - they were all on their own in the paddock till I blundered along and crashed their tryst!

Sorry to upset. I was just quoting the source - which as you noted before is written so doesn’t address how it would be used in oral communication.
I was really addressing the group of us who are still learning that the phrase ‘(the) mainland’ doesn’t refer to John O’Groats.

I haven't been posting much on this thread since I'm in a rather deep situation with the tax department, and given my low income dare not rack up my debt further.

However, @Shadrach you asked me a while ago about my partner's stollen recipe. I asked my partner back then, and he wrote it down with pictures and everything. I then promptly lost it. But my dear partner graciously agreed to write it down again. At this point it's a little late to have it aged by Christmas, but we rarely age ours anyway

Let me know if this isn't readable, I can take better photos if so:

Some notes:

-this makes 3 small loaves

-"raisins" is a stand in for dried fruit in general. Raisins should be present, and we always use apricots as well. We've also used candied rhubarb with excellent results. Variety is key with these

-brandy is traditional, but any high proof, flavorful alcohol will do. We use rum because it's inexpensive and sweet

-the soaking in the rum is better the longer you do it, but starting them soaking right before you do everything else will suffice

-my partner is allergic to eggs (I know I know) so we only ever use egg replacer.

-we often double or triple the recipe
This is very kind of you. Thank you very much.
I'm rather partial to stolen. The ones for sale in the supermarkets aren't particularity good and have lots of crap in them. I'll try this recipe after Christmas.
