Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

I can’t get over the fact that I’m sitting out on the deck in my gardening tee and shorts, getting a mild sunburn, on Christmas Eve. 😲

I’m even more amazed that I just sprinted down the sidewalk after our letter carrier (mailman), dressed in said outfit plus wool socks but no shoes with my fish-belly white (and unshaven) legs flashing in the sun, with our Christmas appreciation for his work. I didn’t realize how many neighbors had gravel driveways! Ouchie ouch ouch

I don't know. Maybe given enough space it's not as much of a problem.
Can't speak for pigs, but with sheep they sometimes also lay down on their lambs. When a sheep lambs it is often put in a 1 metre by 1 metre fenced area. The separation is so they stay close to their lambs and therefore get to know each better and just generally easier to find their mother to drink etc. But sometimes this also means that if the mom is not careful she might lay down on one, especially if she has more than 2. It doesn't happen often and this and it becomes dirty and wet fast are about the only downsides. It is harder to give enough space as you are limited by the amount of fences and indoor space you have, so giving all of them an individual space is always a puzzle. But as soon as the lambs are big enough they and their mom get put with other similar sized families and half-siblings. Don't know how that works with pigs though.
