Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

So, I hate to ask, but what happened to Henry?

I've been mostly gone for about a year after my life came crashing down around me and I had to rehome all my birds (except one elderly OEGB hen who is now an indoor chicken) and move back to the city. Still don't have my own place, I can't afford it, I'm living in my friend's basement...
Henry, Fret and Tull died a few moths ago within the space of a month.:(

Two hours in on and off light drizzle at around 10C.
Everybody came out and stayed out.
As I've mentioned, I've, or rather we have, had some long running SLM problems inherited from Henry. I've never come across anything like it. It's been constant treatment for around a year now. We get the mites dead but neither Mow nor Sylph have shed the scales around their feet under which eggs hatch given the chance.
Mows spurs had become overgrown with, well I'm not entirely sure what it is. What I do know is it was effecting Mow's walking rather badly. With that and her broken toe and her damaged toe she was obviously having mobility difficulties. With great reluctance I removed some of the crud around her spur and between her toes with a scalpel a couple of days ago:eek:. There was no blood and after a coating of iodine and Vaseline Mow was obviously a lot more comfortable. She used to shake her foot when she walked as if trying to shake something that didn't belong there off. That's all stopped now.
What's more, on one leg she's either pecked off or knocked off the remaining crap around her spur which now looks a bit raw but healthy. If she does the same on the other leg then from there on regular maintenance will hopefully prevent her ending up with legs like her dad.
I was and still am so pleased to see the spur stump and the back of her leg clean at last.:fl
Better mobility means she has more interest in foraging and that will i,prove her fitness which after this winter she needs.
Sylph has the SLM affliction as well, and we're down to her ankles currently. She still has five toes with lumps of raised scales on them, but her mobility hasn't been impaired. I'll need some help if I have to remove stuff with Sylph because she fidgets too much.

Just in case I still owe tax:

Can you tell they had mash for breakfast? :lau
I've been late cleaning his coop a few times recently, so we've had chats and wattle/chest rubs while he's stood on the roost waiting for me to finish. This morning he stood and let me stroke his chest while we were hanging out in the greenhouse :love

He's being watchful when I go near mum and chicks, as he should be, but in a relaxed way.

:hitI miss Perris’s contributions. Hanging out here is less fun/interesting since she left.

Tax. The party-run with Katrientje inside. This construction with hwc, panels, netting and bamboo sticks, is made to be able open up a big opening at the south side (if the door on the other side is too narrow).
