Shadrach's Lamps

That's about it on the main carving. One advantage of filling with the slate paste is the recesses don't have to be polished out.

This is the first fill. It usually takes three or four.

As you can see below, the paste slumps quite a lot in the drying.

That's the rough work done. The smaller branches and roots are next.
Still some work to do on the back where the wood has gone grey.
Cracks in the top to fill and base to get flat on lamp body and base body.
A few more hours yet.

Small details added and first oil on.
It's got some nice colour in there.
I've got one more piece of Alzina Surera that will make a similar styled lamp and that's it.
I've done four in this style now each different but rough backed and a tree on the front.

While I've been waiting for stuff to dry, I had a go at a piece of oak again. Very hard work and because the wood is fairly bland compared to Alzina and Alzina Surera they need a design in the shape. I'm leaning more and more to this style of lamp. I'll get one right eventually. This has got promise, but it's also got a few problems. Edge breakout is one and on this lamp, the sides need to be square to the base to make the gouge run along the length work, which isn't parallel or square. Other wise it just looks like sloppy workmanship.
Anyway, I've this far.

Looks great!

Good gravy, @Shadrach , I had no idea you were such an artist! I LOVE your work! I would so buy one, but you are soooo far away. My house is fill of artisan crafts, wall art, etc. I love supporting artists. Plus, it keeps my house full of beautiful, one-of-a-kind pieces.
