Shadrach's Lamps

Pics
Thank you very much for the positive comments.
I took some more pictures in daylight. I'm not quite sure why. Trying to get myself to accept the piece in part I think.
It looks okay stood on my speaker in the house.
Anyway, I've got an interesting project starting. I'll forget about my dissatisfaction in a bit and be ranting on about the next.;)

It is a beautiful piece Shad. Those colour contrasts are very arresting.

I think the dead wood also makes a great matte contrast with the polished wood.

I have seen pieces elsewhere where the artist has gone for a similar effect by burning a part of the sculpture.

I've got some tips for one of my soldering irons to do the burnt wood look. I can't get on with it.
It works on some small pieces but to me it's a bit of a cheat. I know, anything to make my life more difficult.
There is something about the slate paste effect I haven't been able to achieve by any other means. It's not just the colour, it's the texture and the way it takes oil and wax.
I have one of those mini grinder sets as well. I rarely use it. I prefer to make proper cuts in the wood. Perhaps if I did more intricate designs or more delicate carving I would use it more.

While I've been waiting for Mandolin to dry and settle, I've been working on Marble.
I like this bit of wood. It's rock hard but it has serious character.
In the second picture you should be able to see the grain. I've not come across a piece with such consistent grain patterning like this before.
It also has colour. I oiled a section a while ago and the colours are deep and rich.
This piece is going to be all about shape.

Marble is taking shape slowly. My fingers are sore from sanding.:D The other side is still a bit of a mess.
Next I need to cut what will be the base off the lamp body. Even as a sculpture it needs a base.

I did mention another project. I really wasn't sure if I could get the curves I wanted. They are getting there now. I like this. It's another that is better viewed live. There is a lot going on that is easy to overlook in the pictures. Light glare blurs a bit of the detail out.
