Shadrach's Lamps

Sanded back with 120 grit.

First oil. The first oil helps show up the little defects and pulls dust out of the grain.

Sanded back again and base aligned.

Top filled and base filled.

The slate paste is fairly runny when applied. This helps it sink into the voids. The paste also slumps as it dries so even a not very deep void needs a few applications.
Far right is the slate dust with a piece of slate I file the dust off.

Well, I thought I was about there. But, looking at the lamp in daylight at the bottom third on the right is a rather unpleasant wood grain marking. From earlier experience this would only get worse with further sanding. It has to go. It spoils the lamp.

On the back and sides differing colour tones and knots suit the shape and finish. The front needs to be as clean as possible. There is also some work to do on the base profile.

Back on the kitchen table! I'm letting in another piece where the blemish was.

What tool do you use to make such neat incisions?

I don't. It's a hobby really and they're not of a high enough standard to warrant a web site.

A hammer and very sharp chisel.

They don't blend in with the average decor so you need some balls to make the bigger pieces a focus point.

Shad, I finally got to read through this entire thread. What you're doing is art! And the work is amazing. What oils do you use for your finish? Also, your inlay work is simply amazing. Knowing how difficult they are with a router and all sorts of jigs, I can't imagine doing it by hand on a piece of material that isn't square.

I was thinking of all the craftsmanship too! It's masterful work.
