Shame on Ellen

If you can't handle the fact that your dog is a descendent of the wolf and a carnivore, then you should have a pet goat instead of a dog.

Quoted for truth. Just like the people who can't stand feeding whole prey (even frozen/thawed) to snakes so 'snake sausages' were made. Nutritionally complete? Hardly! And most snakes will starve before eating them since they don't recognize it as food *shudders*

So if vegans have SUCH huge issues with feeding their dogs/cats/etc their proper, natural diet, then they need herbivores as pets. Bunnies, guinea pigs, goats, and parrots are just a few examples of commonly kept critters that require no meat in their diet. A dog doesn't eat meat because it wants to, but because it must. And cats aren't just carnivores, they're obligate carnivores. They are designed to get 100% of their nutrition from meat. At least dogs can have plant sources, but they shouldn't if it can be avoided. Wolves typically only consume plant matter as a self treatment if needed or accidentally from the gut contents of their prey.

Why do people feel the need to take their ideological choices and force it upon their pets?

i have to say that i have had good luck with the rachel ray dog food. i have a picky eater and another with allergies.....everyone likes the nutrish. when i tried blue buffalo, i cleaned up soooo much diarrhea!

I've been looking into raw feeding myself for several months and just started two of my dogs on it. One person posted on the "list" I belong to about being a vegetarian and how she know raw would be best but it conflicts with her ideals. She was basically told to get over it. I realllly believe that dogs cannot live a healthy life on plant matter.

BTW Tucker who used to ramdomly puke his kibble every few days has not puked at all on the raw so far.

same here!! first time in a LONG time that i can feed one kind of food to ALL my indoor dogs!! i even have a dobie that has IBD and he is doing amazing on it!! no more icky stinky farts either!!! my dogs coats just SHINE!

I'm a vegetarian - *I* don't need to eat meat, but my cats do, IMO. I feed them the best quality stuff that they'll eat, but it's definitely more meat than anything else, especially since I have chubby kitties that need to go 'low carb'. :p

No that is not just your opinion. Cats are obligate carnivores...without it they will go blind and can die.

I have no idea why that article & everyone is saying that Halo dogfood is vegan. Did no one click on the site provided? The first ingredient is chicken. The second is eggs

Not exactly vegan.
It's a little too holistic for me but it's got meat in it :)

I'm with you on that, but you'd be surprised at the number of folks who insist a vegan diet will work for cats. I am not one of them. Cats eat meat, ya don't like it, you might want to reconsider your pet choice. I have heard that dogs CAN get away without meat, but I personally would feed my dog meat if I had one.

I had my cats before I was vegetarian so I need to keep them healthy even though it means they must eat meat.

I never did know what snake sausages are, thanks for educating me! I think they rather have real or frozen mice/chicks as food.

I agree with you on the vegans forcing vegetations to meat eating animals. In the wild, cats and dogs sometimes would eat plant matter but not so often as our pets when our dogs and cats eat grass and find it disgusting when they puke it up.

Why do people feel the need? Honestly I don't know but some kind of a twisted idea that if they dont eat meat, their animals should not either. I don't think they realize the harm they will do to animals when they really do need meat to survive!

My cat is on Blue Buffalo, did very very well on it. When in lean times, it would be either ProPlan or Purina Cat chow however I better stock on paper towel, she dont do too well on those. Her coat shines!

Yes, cats ARE carnivores! They love catnip and grass once in a while but its rare they would use it as part of their diet in a daily basis. Try feeding a lion or tiger plant matter, they would reject it unless forced (as in zoo) but we ALL know they are strictly meat eating animals.

It is so much a cat and dog can do on plant matter. Even chickens can not do a strict veggie diet, they have to have some kind of protein elsewhere, bugs, our table scraps and even their own species.
