I go outside today to check on the chickens, and one roo (Dude) had attacked roo (handsome). Handsome only has one functional eye, and a disfigured eye on the other side. Well Dude pulled feathers out of his head, and pecked his disfigured side, and his comb was all scabby. My DH is upset because Handsome is his buddy. So, I had had Dude in his own pen, he got out yesterday, so I put him in my paddock, he must have jumped the fence.

I guess he'll have to go. I've actually seen him stalk poor Natalie, I mean really stalk her. And I just can't have anyone picking on my Natalie. She has really become attached to me this past month, and the threesome, Natalie, El, and the mutt have really started to fit in.

Oh my little D'Uccle roo crowed this morning. I love it!

At least the guy at the feed store will take the roo.

So Krista, I see you're going thru the rooster downsizing too.

Ok, Calling all Sharkies. I need your advice. I had a lot of Black-laced BLRWs hatch from my McSpin eggs. I really only want Blues and Splash ( don't we all?) Anyway, I am going to take the Blacks to a critter swap in July. How do I label them? Are they Black-laced BLWRs? Do they carry the potential for Blue and Splash laced chicks? Would there be any reason to keep 1 or 2 to keep the colors good? Help is appreciated Thanks BJ

ps. Gretchen's Polish and Fowlrus' Showgirls are cooking in the new Brinsea. I tried to stack them

ended up scotch taping a bunch to the outside eggs, at least until 1st candling.

If bred to blue or splash laced, they could produced blue. Not if bred to each other. If you breed the black laced to splash laced, you'll get 100% blue laced theoretically.

Unsure of how you would label them? dak

I would call them "dark laced" BLRW and explain that they are BLRW, and can produce blue offspring, in fact I believe keeping the dark color in a breeding program is good for the blue color.

black x black = black , unless there is a dark blue....I have a couple ameraucana that look black but sometimes look blue

so I'm not sure if it's a really dark blue or bad quality black. I was told that at some point you should use black especially on splash birds because over generations the splashing really fades genetically. I would think using a very good blue would do the same though.....

I have one of those from pips and peeps. Though it was a blue at hatch, then black til this past week. Now maybe a dark, dark blue at 6 weeks.

hmm from what I can tell I have a few of those too--Im keeping them all until they grow out a bit more-just to see the coloring-I will keep one in the mix just to darken colors a bit-darker BLRW's with potential??
