Day 21. The only consistent thing about my incubator is timing of the hatch. They either hatch on time, are shrink wrapped, or are dead. Glad I didn't wait on that last one. It is still tentative if the second will be ok. I should know by tomorrow. The first is perky. At least the two that made it are the right color. You should have your own special eggs soon, and you better post your own pics!

Hatching can be real frustrating. Most of my problems were related to readings that were off. Now I have like 3 of everything. I was getting wonderful hatches in my styrofoam, hand turning. Then I got the r-com with the self turner, and I had 1-2 breech chicks each hatch. The r-com doesn't keep them propped up. I don't think I've had any die late on. Usually before day 10, or not developing. Hope you figure out what's going on.

The other thing I wonder about is that we have chickens now who lay nice strong shells, and nice big chicks, but that kinda works against a good hatch, doesn't it?

I've figured out I'm getting a new incubator. I still think my mile high elevation is an issue and a new incubator won't solve that. My hatches are right on time wise. I do have 2-3 hygrometers and thermometers. I keep humidity at 45% then 60-65% for LD. I have a turner. Somehow I think though, they did better hand turned

Sem, it worries me what you're saying about the r-com. I am looking at that and the brinseas.

Dak - hope the second chick makes it.
I am also getting quite a few pipping at the wrong end in the r-com, and so I stand them fat end up at lock down. This is the only but BIG issue I have with the design of the r-com. The r-com suro I think is like the brinsea, and allow you to stand the eggs up during incubation. If it holds the humidity as well as the regular r-coms then maybe go for that (cheaper as well), or the brinsea with humidity unit. Problem with that is then cost, and additional "gear" to fall/knock over!

Sem- I am with you about the r-com.
Still have one polish but not a real crele color, but nice. Also one of I think Nat's birds that is half polish.

Put them in the r-com in a piece of egg carton Sem... seems to work really well. Yah the "trays" allow them to tip over... i agree.

Hey Dak, Any pips?

As for the one blue egg.....

The seller sent 14, 8 smashed 5 detached air sacs /leaking, one partially attached airsac. I set all with intact shells but only the one with the partially attached airsac did anything. NOT cheap eggs either. I am sure they were fertile, just PO trashed them... AGAIN.
The 6 others are lav orps from Bargain. Sent 8, 1 leaking and 1 did nothing. 6 have embryos

.

No new carnage this morning. Racoons got the vulnerable chooks yesterday. If they dig or tear wire they could get to the peacocks but maybe they are put off by their size. DH is talking hot wire, but I know that won't happen soon as he is crazy busy right now.

Hot wire is a good second line of defense after proofing the coops.

Wow, your PO sounds like the Houston PO. I think they drop kick the boxes for fun!

Oh, and congrats on the orps! So pretty!

I'm really proud of my DH for building a hen house a mouse couldn't get into. Our problem is we don't have a covered pen and the pen is actually too big to cover, and we have hawks.

I have to go back and finish reading but have to jump in here.
flash tape, large pin wheels and the balloons with eyes on them may help in a large area for hawks and owls
(look in the gardening sections to find these)
