I actually have heard about leaving in single comb birds to "help" with fertility, but not that there was a fertility issue. I do not have any single combs and have great fertility. I don't understand how the single comb is linked with fertility.....I HATE it when there is something I don't know! lol I also raise black breasted red rosecombs. They are beautiful birds and, obviously, have rosecombs. I have seen in the past where people also say rosecombs have low fertility. But, again, I have not experienced that with my birds. My rosecombs breed like rabbits and produce the same way! I'll have to study the genetic link between rosecombs and fertility. Again, I HATE not knowing!

This is really worth discussing whether it's BLRW's or any breed, and it's certainly NOT breeder specific. My BLRW eggs were wrapped to perfection, most were clear on day 10, one was developing but it always looked like it was 50% behind in size, and it didn't hatch. My seramas at 2 weeks are down to half.

I got JG's, and had 100% hatch, and both of my orders of Salmon Faverolles , last year and this year , were good hatch rates (80%). My Polish hatch rates from orders were 0% the first time and 50% the second.

If anyone's had egg orders of mutts (mixes) how did those hatches do? I would think that mutts would be pretty hardy.

I've also learned how hardy eggs can be. I got 13 salmon faverolle eggs, 2 were DOA, After 3 days in the bator, I thought they were all bad, so the rest spent the night in a cold bator, and were banged and tossed in the trash outside, for the whole day, brought back in, 3 broken. The other 8 were washed off and put back in the bator, and all hatched nice and healthy. How's that for torture!

My understanding of the fertility has to do with the genome itself with single comb on a genome more associate with fertility and the rose comb being known for a genome with fertility issues. Gretchen of your eggs I have 2 splash. 1 roo and 1 pullet I believe based on comb development or in the females case... lack there of. I had decent shipping from ILOVEFRIZZLES with 5/8 still in the bator. Livinzoo... pretty much 0/7 and I have 1 left in the bator just incase I'm wrong. I got more from ILOVE today. I'll see in a week how they do. Oh and Natalie? I lost all the cochin eggs to fertility except 1 so far so I hope it does ok. You're mutts candled well. I LOVE the really dark ones, what did you cross? I'll do a more substantial candling on Sunday.

From my first hatch I think I have almost all hens... I hope I'm as lucky as I think! I did set one MF Booted... my kids are so cute and lost the brother so I set one.. I know I know... knee jerk reaction. I did not candle the olives I may try those on Sunday, but unless one gets leaky they're going all the way to 23 days.

I ordered the spiral bands. Multi-pack. I'll start tracking what I'm doing. I may start making notes.

Dang roo! I knew it Carrie helped me with that one too:-( Thats exactly why they are NOT in a breeding pen anymore...I do have 4/7 doing great in bator though. SO maybe I got lucky? Either way I bet they are all black cochins because it was the blue hen that was in question! witch! Sorry-I guess Ill have to give yah a OE chick? haha Or of you really wanted the cochin Ill split them with yah? Hopefully all 4 will hatch out!

I had the same luck with the Standard Cochin eggs

I found some rubber leg bands for the chicks that I plan on getting...but for my breeders...I plan on getting the spiral bandettes....What color did you get??

OMG I just caught up on the earlier posts, Blessed I am so sorry, you are having some aweful chicken luck.
Natalie- I certainly wouldn't mind having a set of cochins. Maaaybe if I am lucky enough to hatch out a hen you could sell me a roo??
As for the dots? I should have enough live birds to do what I'm aiming for unless I get NO blues. I want blue over splash so they're a 50/50 blue/splash egg rate... I am seriously trying to do my homework on all of this!
Ok, I have bronchiol-funk... nyquil and bed... see you all tomorrow!
