Don't quote me, (I doze off at alot of CE) but I believe it's like Hoppy says, simple close contact. This particular case was a medium breed. It's probably similar to DES (diethylstilbesterol a synthetic estrogen) used for incontinence in spayed female dogs. Adverse effects listed are blood dyscrasias, toxicity to bone marrow resulting anemia, thrombocytopenia, neutropenia and can lead to fatal aplastic anemia.
