she might be a roo 😭

It's your favorite because of that bold pushy attitude, right? I love my SS hens, and have had some very difficult (nasty!) cockerels, who started out 'bold' and 'friendly'.

he/she’s taking a nap on me right now and i can’t believe i might have to say goodbye someday to this little thing. i’m hoping she’s a female, because even if we get a no-crow collar, he’d still get with the hens, which we don’t want. i’ve read about caponizing before and i’m wondering if that’s an option because she ends up being a he, and a sweet one at that, i would be fine dropping some $ to keep him, though i’m worried about any potential problems with that :(

If that's something you might consider, it's done when the cockerels are quite young, so research and find a surgeon very soon.
Traditionally it was done by the flock owner to produce big roasting chickens, without anesthesia, not at all nice. There's a steep learning curve before the death rate goes down to acceptable levels too.
I hope you have a pullet!

Roosters are usually super cuddly in the beginning. If you truly want to try and keep him (if hes a boy) then you need to stop cuddling him. The sooner you set boundaries the better the outcome he wont be a mean rooster.

100% agree with the post above. My meanest rooster (we had to give away) was one that handled a lot as a chick, and so were all the others. He would sit on my shoulder and everything.
My sweetest rooster was hatched under a broody, and I had little to no contact with him. I was out there all the time taking pictures though, so he was used to me. He has never acted hostile to me at all.

I saw someone say earlier that roosters that act bold as chicks will be mean as they grow, and I have to disagree. My silkie rooster I was telling you about, even though he was raised by me, is very sweet. He only chases people who he knows are afraid of him (my brothers and the mailman ) and he doesn’t hurt. I can still hold him and pet him every once in a while, he is great with the hens and with new chicks. Don’t give up on your little chicken just yet if you do find out he’s a rooster. ♥️

thanks for the story! i guess i should just come to terms with it that she’s a little roo, haha. i read a thread with photos of the difference between speckled sussex roos and pullets and i’m hoping to use that information when she gets a little older. if it’s true then i guess i gotta try to find someone on craigslist to take her when it’s confirmed 😭
Keep us updated I’m sure your to far away for me to get her/him if it isn’t a pullet.

I got 5 silkie chicks and every single one turned out to be a roo. I had suspected that the largest, most outgoing one was a roo, but the smallest one, who was my favorite, I was sure was a pullet. I grew quite attached to him and was very sad when it turned out he was a roo too.

If you suspect that your favorite may be a roo, start to distance yourself from the chick emotionally so that it won't sting so hard if he/she is a roo.
