She roasted the chicks! IM SO ANGRY

Alrighty...SO I decided to be a moron and do a little candling tonight. Its day 4, and just see if I could see anything. I saw veins in AT LEAST three (didnt check them all) . Like I said, only day four, and im sort of having a contact attack and not wanting to have them out long, so I put em back in fast, added a bit of water then ran outside to check my babies in the shed for the last time before coming back in. I came in to check the bator, and temp said 103.1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I opened it, and turned my thermostat down a bit. Now Im doubting myself..what if it snuck back up this high in the last few days? My incubators always been really trusty and steady about temp...generally it doesnt have sudden spikes...so im thinking this was just a one time thing.
Im also thinking...if there were temp spikes...there wouldnt be developing embryoes anyways would there?

I would not worry about that spike but keep an eye on. I have had spikes up to 110 and still had hatches.

when I candle I dont remove the eggs just put the light up to them in the turner, with silkie eggs you will see easily if they are clear or developing.

only 17 more days left lol

oh thats great, I would do a regular hatch as they traveled a while and may are surely more fragile as I dont always have the best lav hatches here at the house. fertilization is great but some hens lay such small eggs I think the chicks cant fully develop. But the splits and Ameraucanas all hatch great and I am pretty confident you will hatch out some pure lavs as I know that is the point

I would try to keep the humidity around 50 until day 18 lockdown when I bump it to 70 or 75 if I can and walk away.

Good Luck let me know how it turns out

oh I just posted an auction on eggbid for the same eggs I sent you (from same flock I should say) The chicks just hatched and are a good representation of what you should hatch out. I was taking new pics of the adults today but no one was staying still and my batery was dying but some pics are from today others are older but you get the idea. check out the blk sg she is the newbie, and the last lav pic is one of the ones I hatched it is in the pen with whites and splits now which is why you see all white (and a white split lav sg tail feathers) in the backround

Bren told me that when hatching out my Lav's that I need to watch them closely when they have zipped and help them out. She said they have trouble getting out even after completely zipping. She said that Lav's are harder to hatch. She also said they are slower maturing.

Good luck with the hatch.

yep that is true, although I usually dont have to help them out usually if they pip they zip and hatch on their own, but I have some that never manage to pip even that are developed. Always the smallest eggs. I dont pip them because I have never had much sucess doing that, the chicks may live but they are week and often die, so If they dont manage to at least break through a little i leave them be. That being said I will do anything to get the chick out if it has any trouble that I can see.

I think a parent must make a 9yr old accountable for what turned out to be murder. 9 years old is old enough to understand consequences. Myself I would put the 9yr old in a discipline that teaches all the necessary lessons. She should have to work off the cost of the total loss first and foremost. All allowances must go to you to pay for your losses. I would also have her volunteer at the local animal shelter or similar place during for a period of time but not to disrupt any current activities. She would learn a valuable lesson taking care of those unfortunate animals.

I am so sorry for your loss. ::

My first year in FFA my brother and I were raiseing capons for our county fair and my dad built us a new cage but it did not have a top on it. So when we went to school we would have to cover the top and sides if it looked like rain. My mom would watch them for us during the day and we took care of them after. Almost fair time and you can guess what happen [rain in the morning sunshine later that day and mom going to the store] . Because it was a accidant did not make it better but we got fryers in time for the fair but it still hurt. May be my brother and I should have tried to fix a top & sides for our chickens so my mom did not have to take care of them[ what if]. Maybe you should have fixed it for the light would not have bothered your sister. We learn a lot in life so maybe futher down the road this experiance my help you avoid something much worse. Everything happens for a reason weather good or bad.I am sorry for your loss mine happened 35 yrs ago and I remember it like yestereday. It will get better.

Alright, so...UPDATE: The temp refuses to be EXACTLY WHAT I WANT in there...So its running a little lower than I'd prefer: the temp is 98.7 degrees. I figure a little cooler is better than too warm tho--it might just take them an extra day. What do you all think?
Im so temped to try to candle a couple again..but I dont wanna risk hurting them! GRRR! FRUSTRATING!

should be fine, there are some that say a slightly lower temp will yeild more females so maybe it will be a good thing. That is about the temp my genisis bator reads and it is preset and my hatches are fine.

Today's update...I candled ALL the silkie eggs (and the green eggs...but that didnt go so well because I couldnt see real well.)...Out of all of them, only 3-4 ARE NOT alive. And out of those, 3 show signs of development before they gave up the ghost. SO THAT MEANS THERE IS STILL LOTS OF MOVING, VEINY LITTLE SILKIE EGGS IN THE BATOR! I saw tones of them move, it was so exciting! I can hardly wait!
P.S--The sg egg is alive and well
