Question for anyone willing to answer. I see all the comments on using Medicated feed to the birds. Anyone like to comment on why you should never use medicated feed ?

that's a tough question I don't have an answer to . I thought it was because it had antibiotics in it and added to a growing residence problem. seems I may be mistaken through . not sure any more.

Good question. I never used to use medicated feed. But a friend here swears that chicks need it, even though we're pretty dry. I use it now for the first week or so, and expose the chicks to native soil and litter from the big run after couple of days. When the small bag runs out, I switch to starter/grower.

Will be interested to hear your responses.

I do use medicated feed. Just because I want my chicks to build up some resistance to cocci. The people that lived on this property last year had chickens here, so I don't know how much the ground is infected. But I don't think you can ever call eggs organic if you used medicated feed, is that correct?

Question, Why should we not use wire flooring to brood chicks. Without some kind of covering.

Because there feet can get caught??? I've read with certain fowl, it's best to not use wire so they can pick at their feces and get double the dose of medicated feed. (Peafowl) Don't know if this applies to chickens, though.

My phone ate my multi-quote! (And you know it was a long one)!
Predators and chicks dying: :hugs
It seems like everyone is loosing chicks this week. I checked on my neighbors and found 2 trampled, eyes closed & barely breathing. It's a sad sight.

Walnut that's interesting you do autopsy on the turkey poults. They do them on the peafowl boards too but call them "necropsy", not sure what the difference is?

Wv, I hope you get the Seabright eggs! I can't wait to follow your hatch!

Sorry for everyone I missed!

Of course I will update about the sebrights. Just hope her girls lay well this week.

What ever happened with the eye injured chicken?

I will be back in a few and try and explain some of this for all. Just doesn't make since to hatch them off and then do not know how to brood them. Class will start soon.

I use it, Don, but mostly out of habit. I have read that it is better to let them gradually build their own immunity to cocci, but old habits are hard to break. Tell me why you would never use it. Also, do you have any insight on why I'm having these after hatch deaths with the BCM?
