She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

Ok SC, you've heard my opinion. If you think these silkies are beautiful then I will stand behind you and eat crow. This is what I'm up against: (the last one scares me!!)
https://hudsonvalley.craigslist.org/grd/5152945491.html

What the heck are they breeding? There is nothing "cute", "cuddly", or endearing about them. I am not a silkie lover, but there is something about seeing a fuzzball with little fuzzballs that just makes me like them a little. These things? No thanks.

Appears I'm having that same luck. Ducks and chickens! 3 out of 4 ducks, 2 out of 3 polish, now both my silkies! Geez. Better luck with the ones you go and get! (and with my new eggs!)

I know how you feel. I believe that I have 6/7 boys from my last hatch! I have to get some pics, so SC can take a guess. Someone just wrote me back about call duck hatching eggs!! But I'm not crazy about the colors she has but at least I have a back up connection, if all else fails! And she warned me they are hard to hatch...I told her my friends will be helping me.

I like that last one!! He's so funky looking. I've never seen one like that! I'd almost take him cause he's so weird....lol

:ep What!!!! You love the under dog, Amy! I wouldn't turn my back on a chicken lookin like that for a second! No way!

Oh wow...
You'd think friends of my brother would have better taste :gig
I'm just picking at you because you were talking about the red combs. Doesn't hurt my feelings at all, I know they are pet quality.
Mine still look better than those, though.
And shocker, I totally disagree with Amy. That last one is hideous. No wonder they don't like BYC. They probably asked Don what he thought of them :lau

No, those are not your brothers friends. They have really nice silkies. The rest of them in the area are like that link above...I'm sorry but those are some ugly birds.

I have a friend that raises those. Her problem is she gets stuck with a ton of roosters.
My first birds were Cream Legbars and I drove down to San DIego and paid $30 each since my coop wasn't legal and did NOT want to have a chance of roosters in suburbia. Peace of mind was worth every penny.

My very first chick (my special needs roo) was an only chick hatched in September when no one has chicks. If he wasn't out with us, he wasn't happy. He became very spoiled very fast.
Yup, definitely happening here!

You are wise. I would rather drive for a few hours than have a hatchery grade bird for years.

There's someone around here that buys batches of hatchery birds and re-sells them for a dollar more each than what she paid. She's the one with the BR and RIR. (No thanks)

LOL. That would make him hate BYC for sure! Especially if he is convinced his silkies are show quality.

So I think the 4 pics I posted may have been the same boy.
I just bent down to pick this one up and she squatted for me. Never has happened before. So now do I have one and one???
I'm sorry guys. Thanks for the help though.

I am. It's true. He looks friendly-ish....lol Mind you I'd never pay for a chicken that looked like him, but I'd give him a home if he needed one...lol He might have the best personality. You never know.

Why do you think they can get away with it Don?

Is it possible they are starting to develop early and kind of pause while the hen is off during the day? It seems like I read a study that a big meat bird hatchery did where they tried that, but I can't remember what the results were.
I read a similar if not the same study, and wish I could lay my hand on it. They took eggs, incubated them until they could tell if they were viable under high lumen candling (I think day 3 - 4). Then they removed that batch, threw out the duds, and held them while they repeated the process with the next batch. After candling the second batch, both batches were combined and went on to hatch after 21 days of incubation. I'd love to find that study, and do a repeat with my own eggs. It would allow you to hatch a full bator full with less than optimal eggs by combining 2 clutches. Or, if you had one batch of eggs, and had to wait a few days for the second batch to arrive... or... just b/c you're a "what if" type of person!
