I went to check on my little rescue chick this evening and he's doing great! I was so happy he made it and is doing good!! Also, my neighbor pulled out an egg from under the other broody and handed it to me. It was zipping!!! I talked to it and it peeped back at me! Amazing!!

My neighbor has a sick chicken that can't keep it's balance. It keeps falling over and can't walk. It came out of my mouth before I could stop it: "Meraks". After Don's lesson, that's all I could think of. My neighbor who has had chickens for 50 years, has never heard of it. I'm leaning towards vaccinating anymore chicks I hatch. I don't know what's wrong with his chicken but it could be, right?

Sick and unbalanced could be anything really... vitamin deficiency can cause issues too...

Btw, the Marek's vaccine is made with a turkey form of Marek's and does not cause the vaccinated birds to shed the virus... the only thing is if you have a necropsy done on a bird that's been vaccinated you need to tell them that as bloodwork *could show* a false positive for Marek's...

Marek's vaccine does not endanger unvaccinated birds...

Does candling happen on day 7 or day 10? Also since I dont have a candler which would work better a regular flashlight or an LED?

You can candle any day you want, but I agree with Ravyn, sometimes you can't be sure until day 10 if its clear. My last hatch of chicks, I was sure of a few clears by day 7-8, but they were thin shells.
I think whichever light is brightest! LED usually is, but if you have a good regular one, try it! I didn't care for the LEDs with several in a circle, but one bright LED bulb worked best for me. Mini-maglite is my favorite. (I have a weakness for all the flashlights they put by cash registers everywhere!)

Hello All…..Just did my 10 Day Candling….Out of the 18 eggs still in the incubator, 15 are viable and 3 seem to be non-fertile. (10 Buff Orpington and 8 High Noon x Leiper).

I did notice in some that the air cells seem a bit small and some others seemed more than ample. How does the correlation work with Humidity and the size of the air cell? The higher the humidity, the bigger the air cell develops? or just the opposite? All are welcomed to clarify for this rookie. Thanks

This has probably already been answered between your post and the end which I haven't read to yet, and if so, sorry...

Higher humidity = smaller air cell
Lower humidity = larger air cell

The air cell is always present in the egg, but in a freshly laid egg it is too small to see. That's why it's hard to find the fat end of a football or golf ball shaped egg.

When setting, ideally the air cell will be no larger or thicker than a nickel. By day 10, diameter and thickness of two quarters. By day 18, it should be about a quarter of the total height of the egg, and on a slant where the shoulders of the chick are on the side closer to the fat end. Too big an air cell is just as bad as too small an air cell.

You can candle any days you want, but if you don't have much experience at it, with lighter colored eggs try day 7, for darker eggs day 10.

I use a small 360 lux LED flashlight.I bought it at ACE Hardware, Nebo Micro Redline. It's wicked bright and tiny.

Ugh. Dog just got skunked again! Bo has more street smarts and stays back, Layla is the protector and all trespassers must be attacked. Out of peroxide, so washed her with orange Castile soap and baking soda. Good enough for now. I'm tired!

Interesting. Does she eat layer feed or any oyster shell or any of that stuff? I'm curious as to why one would not lay... I hope somebody has an answer

I don't know about oyster shell but she eats everything else. I put them in all there feed these chickens are picky eaters BCMs will eat anything SLWs like scratch and layer pellets and will leave crumbles EEs like crumbles and scratch but only if the scratch is on the ground but will leave it in the feeder. they all like millet wheat sunflower seeds but not milo. I add oyster shells to there mix and cut back if they are leaving it in the feeder. I feed my chickens what they like to eat. this little chicken likes crumbles with a little a very little scratch mixed in. the local farmers COOP does a good job on scratch they put in wheat sunflower seeds layer pellets oats cracked corn and most of the time I'm happy with it when I'm not I'll buy wild bird seed to mix with my feed . this little girl is spoiled loves my wife comes right to her to see what she has for her today .she never cleans out her feeder so I do to keep her feed fresh. but I'm not good to my chickens treat um like chickens.
