You would say that, wouldn't you?

SC the more I see of you in pictures the more you look like my brother in law.

Is that your sister's husband, or your DHWSO's brother?
What day are you on? I sort of hope my eggs hatch when I am working in the vineyard for a few days
Day 11. I usually don't candle until lockdown, and intentionally set my eggs to hatch on a workday

So hopefully I'll have as good a hatch as you.

I noticed the temp set is every .2 degrees. Do you use 99.4 or 99.6? Or something else?

And another question.. do you use the foam strips that go between the metal rails? Looks like they came with the pump, but I think I'll use them.

Will be late tomorrow evening (probably 9-10pm) before I get home with eggs, but I will probably set them when I get in anyway.

I'll be surprised if I get any sleep tonite. I'm so excited!

Given those 2 choices I would opt for 99.6, but after double checking all of my temps my display is actually set at 100.0.
The foam strips come with the EX model, not the Advance, so I don't have them. I would think that foam would take up too much room, but they may be thinner than I think. The metal rails work just fine on their own, unless you are an angry drunken Canadian computer programmer

Foam strips? Is that limited to Advance?
When you order the EX pump kit, it comes with the pump kit, but also some upgrades for the Advance which include the foam pads for the rails and a pad for the bottom of the egg tray. They are neat additions, but not necessary. I may use them if I had them, may not. If I were WV, I wouldn't even mess with the humidity pump until lockdown, if at all. Now, it would be great for wintertime hatches, where the humidity is so much more difficult to maintain

Well, maybe I'll go with 99.8...

There were some misc things in the box, and some evidence that she ordered other accessories also. Here's what the foam looks like. I think I will wait and decide tonight, whether to use the foam or not, depending on how tightly everything fits. And depending on how many eggs I end up with.

If the bantam eggs don't fill the incubator, I would use the pads. I have been setting marans eggs all year, and they go from wall to wall without the pads. NT hates the rails because he sets them too tight. I leave a little play for the eggs, and haven't cracked one yet, but the foam would be great if you had room. The pad for the bottom of the egg tray would be nice when they start hatching, but I would be afraid it set the larger eggs up too high in the tray. I saw your post where you said you would probably set tonight. I don't blame you, I would too. With the brinsea it doesn't matter if they hatch at night. You can leave them in there for 36 hours and play Lambs :D

Hatch day should be Labor Day! So I'll have the long weekend.

And I didn't see any issues with the rails either. I tried a few of my current eggs, just to check spacing. But the eggs I'm getting will be very small.
I don't remember seeing a pad for the bottom of the tray. Do you not put anything in there during hatch? The basket is pretty tight weave, so it should be fine with nothing, I would think.

I don't use anything. I saw another thread where an EX user had a foam pad for the tray, but she had bought hers used, also. Maybe it was something the original owner had fabricated. I've always hatched directly on the bare tray. The other thing you are going to love is how easy it is to clean afterwards. Takes about 10 minutes to get it spotless

Don't beat yourself up over it. It could have just as easily gone the other way. We never know if the assisted hatch will turn out well, or not so well. Between Amy and myself, I think we'd both tell you that our assists have had a very high success rate with a positive outcome: not being able to identify the AH chicks in a brood line up several days after the hatch. Will Amy and I run into assists with negative outcomes? Of course we will. But in the mean time, we have more pullets in our coops giving us eggs than we otherwise would have. I think the part of the AH decision and the discussion that needs to be had is: At what point after an AH do you determine that it's time to euthanize the chick, and is it more ethical to euthanize at some point than waiting for the chick to eventually die? And... I can see, and completely support the blue stance of non-intervention. Go Blue, but... I'll stay Red!!!
I completely see and support the red stance as well, I just choose not to do it. I'm hatching fairly frequently, and between broodies and my incubator I have more chickens than I need for myself. Aside from the BCM I am keeping for myself, all of my hatches are to be sold. AHs that end up disfigured, or ultimately don't make it take up a lot of time and emotional energy, and handicapped chicks don't sell. I don't have room for special needs. I want healthy, strong chicks for myself and my customers. The euthanization is the hardest part. The loud cheepers are the ones that usually don't make it, so much so that in my instance that is a sign of a needed cull. Euthanizing a fluffy chick is the worst part of keeping chickens, so I try to minimize the circumstances where that will be a possibility, and for me that means no AH

Well, this makes me feel pretty bad for #13.
sad.png

#13 was my assisted hatch. I thought it needed an AH due to shrinkwrap b/c of the faulty humidity gauge. Ended up it was a fairly moderate splay leg. He could walk, but was really off balance. We did our best with the bandaids, closing the gap a little every day. Separated him with one other chick to keep him company and checked his progress daily. He was very loud and woke me cheeping multiple times a night. Just wanted attention, I guess, he was warm, and fed and watered when I would check on him. He was precious, but the gap between his legs seemed to be getting wider each day when we changed the bandaids out. We continued to lessen the gap a little every day and he got around just okay with it on, but when we would take it off, he could barely stand. Yesterday afternoon, we found him face down in the feed.
hmm.png
He was gone.

I even cut small holes in glad ware type lids to prevent him from drowning in the feed, but it didn't work. I feel just awful still.

Anyhow, that's why I have been thinking blue lately. Makes me feel selfish, but we really did all we could possibly do and he still didn't make it.

know the felling. one of the two I assisted this weekend ,was dead this morning and it was the stronger of the two. the other is getting weaker looks like. I had both drinking don't about eating. this one was getting around good . even though I move them around in the incubator I still get some sticky ones. I don't think the other one will last the day. looking forward to building another Incubator .big score Friday mini wine cooler with two fans in two compartments with a digital temp. read . won't cool might try to fix it first just to play but don't need it . and already have a bread oven that's huge with oven on top and riser on the bottom . all stainless steel in and out but it weighs ton. wherever it ends up it stays.

Sorry to hear that.

That's exactly what made me blue. You get emotionally attached to the ones you try so hard with. I assisted several in my first few hatches. I'm full on blue now. I haven't even candled the eggs I have in right now
What day are you on?

Hello folks. Busy days be slowing, so you'll be seeing more of me again.

Chicapee, I hope Miracle is doing well!

WV: CONGRATS ON YOUR BATOR!!!

Everyone who's currently hatching: I hope all is going well! I can't remember all the updates that have been posted.

SJ: if I can't figure out how to spell something, I just figure it a different word that works for the context. It makes me feel stupider entering the wrong spelling in hopes of Google finding the right.

Amy: um. Are you hatching right now??

SC: mmmmmmm oh I don't have anything to say to you. ........oh wait, yes I do. That chickie in your shoulder:

Which Amy??? Not me. I'm done hatching for the year.

Don't beat yourself up over it. It could have just as easily gone the other way. We never know if the assisted hatch will turn out well, or not so well. Pretty much said exactly what I was thinking. I've only lost one of my assisted hatches, about 9 days after hatch. I really thought he was doing well. it was hard, but I wouldn't have done a thing different. Even if the odds were different and I lost 2/3, just knowing I helped the one would make it worth it to me.
