She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

Superman would look a bit happier than that, irl, I think?

Final count is 9/12 So, 75% Full on blue this time(unless you count 2 candles and marking the air cells at lockdown as red/purple).

2/2 BA's, and 7/10 Rhodebars(3 girls and 4 boys).

We ran lower and moister this time. Last time we ran high and dry. We also candled a lot more.
So, now I guess we'll have to collect more Rhodebar eggs and run a high/dry hatch to see if it was the method used or the stock that lowered our hatch rate.
Drat, and hubbs thought he was hiding the bator from me until the HRIR get here.

We are in love, though!

I can't think of a better use for our master bath right now.

Now the eggtopsy:
Is this a drowned chick? It pipped internally, but quit after a day or so.

We had one malpositioned chick that quit after its external pip. I stayed blue in that case b/c I read that genetic issues can cause that at times.

The 3rd chick that made it to lockdown never pipped internally and the membrane was white and dry(no pics). Is that shrink-wrapped?

@sideWing , I didn't get to taking pics today, try again tomorrow.

@meganhundley , How's it going?

@E1 else, looks to me likes those pictures have red all over them

guess I'd better go check them chickens agaim

How flippin cute! The little chipmunk stripes are just adorable.

Personally, I dont think what we have seen as shrink wrapped is really the cause of death. I think its the result, instead. I believe once they die, the membrane stops being pliable, and constricts around the dead chick. Not the reverse. But that's just my theory.
Congrats on the bunch of new babies!!
In the eggtopsies I have done, I have only had two that were truely shrinkwrapped. I knew they were before I eggtopsied because when I candled during a lull in the action on day 20 (after almost all had hatched/pipped) the air cell was so drawn down it looked like over half the shell. They were both silkie eggs and I think it was the egg quality that caused it.

Now, my thoughts on shrink wrapped: I don't believe eggs get shrink wrapped from opening the bator after pips. I do believe that if you don't have adequate humidity and dry air blows across the membranes of a pipped egg that it can cause the membranes to dry out and glue around the chick causing the chick not to be able to finish hatching. I believe it is a much more rare occurance that we are led to believe in hatches that are running with adequate humidity to begin with. Shrink wrapping doesn't happen in seconds. The membrane dries and shrinks as it dries much like leather. I believe this happens over a period of time during incubation due predominately to too low humidity causing extreme dryness and oversized air cells to collapse and shrink wrap the chick. It is also my belief that many people that cry shrink wrap are mistaken and what they are seeing maybe indeed membrane drying around the chick and gluing it. A true shrink wrap will pull the chick to the bottom of the shell in a ball as it the membranes dry. And that is my opinion. (Regardless of the latest and greatest "research" - I'm a firm believer that science messes up ALL THE TIME.)

Those are absolutely adorable!! I hope I have some of them tomorrow. When I checked on them at 2 this afternoon, in about half, maybe more, the air cells had started to draw down in them. I have been instructed by everyone NOT TO TOUCH them anymore!! Lol. So I am restraining my hands, by force if necessary, til well after they've pipped. Then I will assist if neccesary. I will be bat**** crazy by the time this is over. Wait... I already am bat**** crazy :/ I'll be craziER then.

I realize this is a long shot, but I found a bunch of feathers in our field today, like something had been attacked. Thankfully it wasn't any of my chickens. Hubby may have run over something mowing, but I have no idea what it might have been. Do these feathers look familiar to anyone? Most of them were only white, some had this gray/brown odd pattern coloring on them. Any ideas?

Those are really pretty. Glad Walnut and BYC knew they were from an owl - how cool is that?

Wait... Are you cheating on us, getting outside advice? :gig

Seriously though, I agree, sit on your hands and enjoy watching! Hopefully you will have something happen soon! :fl

I would never get advice from anyone but y'all!! Lol. Seriously, I don't think I'd trust anyone else to give me advice. Although the guy I got my bator from is a true blue BLUE... he really reminds me alot of SC :/
