Last exercise...

We are on day 4 also.  I candled a few but couldn't see a thing:(   I don't have candling down so I'm hoping it's just me.

I have a really high powered flash light. I only candle in a dark room with no light. And my eggs are pretty light in color except the CLB eggs. Lol!!!! I'm sure you will have some that grow. ;)

Ugh... I hope not... like I said, just let me know... Silkies are actually picking up their laying now... :gig

Makes no sense... all the lf are slowing more and Silkies are on an upswing... :/
No

That is my reaction to that word, period... :sick

Silkies are funny.....I don't get it. Thank you!!! I will let you know in about 5 days or so. ;)

So...I wonder who thought it would be a good idea to cook a fertile duck egg and eat unless it was an accident. Cooked it thinking it was an egg and not a baby duckling. Then felt bad and didn't want to waste it. Or they were really hungry......don't get it. :idunno

Thank you :D I'll post some pics of the others tomorrow morning. I looked at #2's naval and he looks normal now! And a forth has hatched!!! With a 5th on the way and another pip waiting to zip :weee

Yay!!!!

*UPDATE* #5 is out and looks good so far. He has an umbilical cord trailing behind him but it doesn't look bad like the others did. K, now I'm going to bed for real ;) lol

Okay......good morning!!!!

*Is not at all avoiding finishing working out*

I am about to head to work with a pumpkin as our weight. Eeehhhh!!!

Congrats on the hatches Megan! I hope you have a full day of hatching! Next time you hatch I would definitely increase your temps at the beginning of your incubation. The two late hatches back to back and the navel issues point to low temps. Update when you can!

Ross, congrats on those little itty bitty heart beats! :love

Amy, do you have two chicks this morning? And is mama protecting them from the other girls?

Are freshly layed cloudy eggs fertile and are mercury thermometers the most acuract respond a sap or pm me but quote

I think the bulls eye is the only indication of fertility, but I could be wrong. Also, I use a glass thermometer but it's not Mercury. I properly calibrated it and it was dead on. So I think it depends on the individual thermometer. But most can be calibrated and should be. As long as you calibrate you will know it's exact temp. Let me know if you'd like a link for proper calibration.

What's cloudy? The albumen? You can go to the Learning Center, and read the many articles in Hatching Eggs 101. It will tell you how to look for the "bulls eye" to determine if the egg is fertile. I think the cloudy you're referring to is just an alteration in the albumen. It shouldn't affect your hatch. As Ruby said, you'll need to calibrate any thermometer you choose to use. I use a mercury bulb thermometer, and consider it to be very accurate. The down side of this type is that it takes forever to get a reading, and they're hard to read, and then need to be shaken down. But, I leave one in my bator, as it will give a good "over time" reading to tell me what my bator high temp has been over the last few hours. I calibrate ALL of my thermometers (that can be done this way) in a cup of 100* water, using a digital medical thermometer as my gold standard as they're advertised as +/- .2* accuracy.

I use an analog meat thermometer, for like barbecuing, and when I calibrated it it was only off by about a half of a degree. I used the ice water calibration method though.
ETA: If you google "how to know if an egg is fertile" and go to images there are several pitures of the "bullseye" that indicates fertility.

Woke up this morning to a new fuzzy butt!! That makes 6 so far and there's also another pipper. That leaves 1 egg that hasn't done anything so far. I'll candle that 1 in a little bit since he hasn't done anything yet.
ETA: Just candled and he's still alive. He apparently doesn't want to come out of that egg, lol.
