She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

Sad day.

My little black chick is GONE! Literally gone! Every time I peeked in the coop she was in a different place with them. Then I went to leave for an appointment and peeked in and she wasn't in the coop. She was in the run beside the coop door, scratching her little heart out. The little yellow one was trying to get under her and crying and she ended up kicking her twice and sending her flying. I looked everywhere for the little black one. Nothing. No body no sign. Needless to say, little Frosty is now in the house with us. I don't know if it was the right decision, but I am afraid she will meet the same fate as her sibling. Momma, apparently is not the quality mamma that my banty is.

So sorry to read this

You did the right thing by bringing her in. Or at least you did what I would do

How secure is your run? You think something got in & snatched her?

So sorry! One of my orps did this this year with guinea keets - she just didn't pay them attention as well as she should have and they all disappeared one by one until she only had one left, which I took and finished raising myself.

Awe! Poor frostys loenly now too

Thanks guys. I know she will NEVER have another chance if I have say. I've watched how good of a momma my Banty is, and the spitz doesn't even come close. My banty has been awesome. I just felt if I left her out there, it would end the same way.

Brooding an only chick is not ideal, I know. Peep was an only (and spoiled) and it wasn't easy, but he's a year now and even with his leg problem, he has adjusted well and found his place among the rest. I probably won't sleep for the next who knows how long, but if it means the little one survives, I can live with that.

My son has fallen into the "daddy" role with joy. (I'm just grandma.) I'm pretty sure she prefers him to me too...lol I guess when she gets bigger I can train her to these chicken diapers I have...

I just wish I knew what happened to little "Ice".

No, Chibi and her babies have been in and out for almost a week now. There's been no commotion. My run is NOT suited for little ones, I did not plan on having little ones out there. He was quite tiny too. He could have slipped out no problem. I've never (knock on wood) had a predator problem yet, especially during the day. They are literally back yard chickens. His little body could very well be under straw they kicked up for all I know, though I tried turning over any looser spots I saw. "Momma" was not upset in the least bit.

Oh no! That's so sad. I'm sorry.
Thank you.

She's beautiful! I like the name. YAY for #8!

Air baffles? Do you have any pictures? This sound interesting. I have an LG9300 forced air and it seems odd to me that the heater is placed as it is. I would think should go around everything.
No pics. I just put some tinfoil to direct the air flow in the direction I wanted it to go. Also put a strip along the front to keep the direct heat away from the eggs that were closest to the light bulbs.

Sad day.

Well, don't be too surprised if he suddenly reappears tomorrow.
My run started life as a 12'x6' chainlink dog kennel. Because of the slope I put it on, the end away from the coop is off the ground, supported by cinder blocks. I bought a roll of 1"x2" welded wire to fill the gap, then a 12" apron, attached with cage clips, on top of the ground to discourage diggers. Lastly, I added 1/2" hardware cloth around the platform that the coop rests on, and 2"x4" welded wire across the top of the run, with a plastic tarp over it for shade & rain/snow protection. It ain't exactly pretty, but on uneven ground it was the best design I could come up with w/o a major cash outlay. I could've used chicken wire in places, especially since it's easier to work with on uneven terrain, but I don't trust it...heard too many horror stories about coons ripping right through it. And, believe me when I tell you, you have coon & possum & skunk around, to say nothing of fox; you're just lucky not to have had run-ins with them yet...you will.

This is random, but does anyone in here keep geese? Specifically American Buff? I was sold this female as a pure American Buff, but, I am starting to think that perhaps a Canada goose gander had a liaison with her mother...
