She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

LOL! Mind if I share my take on chicken math? ;)

4 hens plus 2 roos
=22 chickens. (because you should have 10 hen per roo)

20 hens, (silkie and BO) + 2 roos, + the arrival of spring, (can anyone say BROODIES??)
= 45 chickens, of which 20 are roos.

Then, 20 roos = chicken soup, which equals a mysterious package from someplace called "Brinsea". (Must have been the cat...)

1 mysterious package + 25 hens + a feeling of inadequate chicken numbers because of aforementioned processed roosters = 70 chickens.

But then you have an urge to get ducks which means 2 ducks =17 ducks, but you absolutely have to get turkeys, geese, quail and pheasants and then you have to debate emu and peafowl.

70 chickens (Other poultry does not count here!) plus the discovery of an exiting place called "ebay"
= 40 hatching eggs

(While getting coffee, the cat walked in again and placed the winning bid on 40+ frizzled tolbunt polish hatching eggs.)

40 hatching eggs + 21 days = 20(+) chicks.

(After the tolbunt hatch, you realize those guys are so stinkin' cute you really should have more and set up a breeding program. Sooo....)

4 chickens + 2 chickens =
150 chickens and a 200 egg incubator on the way that that dumb cat accidentally bought!
(the 17 ducks, 5 peas, 3 geese, 7 turkeys, 5 pheasants, 15 quail, and 2 emu don't count)

I just realized something! Common core is based on chicken math!!!!

Thought I'd jump in and say hi!  I'm starting my 2nd hatch on Monday after having a 100% failed hatch.  This time is going to be MUCH better.  After talking with a local about the eggs he set about the same time and how low his hatch rate was (like 5 or so from 3 dozen) He said it could have been the cold snap we got right around when those eggs would have been laid/collected.  it was disappointing because we did everything we knew right (and it was in a classroom with 1st-3rd graders!).

So I'm trying again! I got some local barnyard mix eggs from someone, and I got a Brinsea Mini Advance (on Amazon's warehouse deals so the price wasn't too bad) and I'm taking everything to my daughter's classroom on Monday.  I'm hoping the "set it and forget it" method will work nicely in the classroom setting.

I have 3 hens at my house, and they are a year old in the next week or so.  Just starting laying again after a winter break and I *love* getting eggs again.  I'm hoping to add an EE or Ameraucana, and a Maran to my flock to give myself--I mean, my kids the excitement of a colorful egg carton :D  The roo that's over the eggs I got is a Maran and I have one pretty dark egg in my mix so I'm hopeful it will hatch beautifully and be a girl!

Sorry about the hatch but glad you didn't give up!! I absolutely love my mini!! Best incubator ever. You'll do great this time!

My first paint chicks that I hatched from my own! I'm very happy with them, so far. So would they be considered F1?

Those are gorgeous!!! Box them up quick, I'll give you the address!! :gig

Seriously, nice job!! :thumbsup

And those are considered Your Line now... you bred them, that is your breeding... your flock is based on (yadda, yadda's) line, but those were bred by you... F1 is used for a 1st generation in crossbreeding different breeds for a project, like Olive Eggers and such... :)

Incubator warehouse sent me the old one....

It's still a d*mn good bator... but you can call or email them (they call back quick) and they will email you a return shipping label and will replace it if you want... they accidentally sent me the whole wrong model once and were amazing about sending the right one as soon as you confirm its in the mail going back...
