She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

Hello, beautiful peeps.
I was wondering if the ship-a-thon is still on.

I'm getting a few dozen B/B/S Australorp eggs from RattlesnakeRidge tomorrow(squeeeeeeeee!!!), and talking to him about shipping methods jogged my memory.

How is everyone? Miss you guys. Been so busy lately I don't even have time to gaze lovingly at myself in the mirror; forsaking household duties right now. . .

910!!

So tomorrow is my son's 8th birthday. Even though we are having his actual party Saturday, I'm putting the cake together tomorrow. I still have half the upstairs to get in order and I want to steam clean the downstairs. I have a feeling I'll be wanting to toss this cake half way through it....lol We'll see. Anyhow busy day tomorrow and the rest of the week.
Good luck, Amy. Hope you have time for pics!

Lol, sure thing. ;)

Things have been a blur lately. My relaxation has consisted of listening to audiobooks and music while moving and watching tv while doing dishes. If I sit down lately, it's been responsibility-type stuff. We had a nasty computer virus at first, but hubbs got that all sorted.

I'll be back to my usual, lazy, annoying, sociable self some day soon(I hope!). You know how things get, spring's right around the corner!

I think I need another incubator that holds at least 4 doz. What should I get? I guess I could get 2 more that hold 24 each....... Brinsea is so expensive.

ETA: 24 eggs. Not doz. :)

1. Find an old GQF cabinet and fix it up. I like the plywood ones best, they will be an ugly mustard color. Some have two wafer thermostats, some have a proportional electronic and a wafer, some have just a newer model proportional electric, and really old and basic ones may have just a single wafer. No matter, all can be fitted with the latest analog proportional thermostat if you like. Parts are readily available. They are insanely rock solid throughout incubation.

2. I'll knock down and ship you a Brinsea Ova Easy 380. I like the GQFs that much better. I just put a new turner motor in, but it needed a 25-30 RPM motor and I bought a 60 RPM motor. 12v DC motors are less than $20. This one has a digital thermostat, heats up very quickly, holds and recovers temps very well. Missing the hatching basket, but otherwise clean and complete.

It may be more capacity than you think you need, but it's really nice to be able to throw extras in to hatch for sale, or to spread across trays when staggering hatches. You can use your current incubators as hatchers.

I must have read the 7 day rule thing here somewhere.. but I like 10 better!
Here's what I've collected so far..

I didn't start dating them before 2-29.. but I have a good idea the oldest eggs are from 2-25. That will put them just over 2 weeks when I set them all on Saturday. (3/12)
Nice to know that the tilting isn't a huge thing, I've been working a lot of hours so I just do it in the morning and when I get home. And since I've been getting home late.. you'll notice my Olive egg says "cold" on it.. it was so cold when I collected eggs that evening that the 1 olive egg is the only one from that day I'm going to attempt to hatch. It had some condensation on it after coming inside, so not even sure if that'll hatch or not.
I have shipped eggs coming next week.. my first time trying shipped eggs. So I'll probably be a little cautious with those. Heck, I even ordered another incubator so I could hatch them separately from mine..
Oh one thing about the damp towel, it's keeping the eggs cooler than without it. I think cooler is better than warmer, right?

3 day old eggs are better than fresh laid (pH of the albumen changes quite a bit, but fresh eggs are still good to set).
7 day old eggs are still great.
10 day old eggs are good.
14 day old eggs are okay.
21 day old eggs, some may hatch. They have a greater chance of going bad in the incubator if they don't develop.
Eggs that sat in a hot bedroom for over a month are rotten.

I bought some that were supposed to be hatching eggs but were actually stink bombs.

Eggs that have deep chilled can still do fine. I've been collecting them in weather in the teens and twenties, as long as they don't freeze they are okay. Do not wipe them dry, or warm them quickly. If they are very dirty and get condensation, pass on them if possible. But if they are clean, just handle as little as possible and let them slowly come to room temperature and air dry.

Storage temps between 55 and 70 are best for suspended animation.

I'm not a shipped egg hatching expert, so I can't be of much help there.
