She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

tomorrow hits lockdown... day 18... OMG.. already. I am freaking scared to death. lost another Sultan I think. I am glad I didn't have really heavy duty expensive rare eggs this time. You all were SO right.  I have a HUGE momma that looks good to hatch. I can not imagine the chick that is going to come out of this thing. GOT to be Godzilla. I am not really happy with the air cells I don't think. Looked a them last night, and they really don't look much different than day 14. I am SO freaking out about the hatch. Any little hints or tidbits for the 'newby' hatcher on my first lockdown and hatch?????? (besides calm down???? lol)

on a second note, my second batch of eggs should be here in about a week and a half.  THESE are very important eggs. I need to figure out what I did wrong  and FIX it.  suggestions are welcomed you all.

Yes, calm down. LOL. If your air cells are still small, you could wait another day to increase humidity.

Dominant- a double doze of the gene has a good chance of naked or ingrown feathers.
You can't tell at hatch, but thier first feathers will tell you- you can tell by about 3-4 days old and it's very obvious by about 10 days old.
Frizzle breeders all recommend to either run a frizzle roo with non-frizzled hens, or a plain roo with frizzle hens.

When I got to the local auction next month I'm hoping to find a really good silkie roo, beacuse if I cross him with my current batch of frizzle girls that are nearly POL then I should start getting some decent sizzles.
I knew that double copies caused "frazzles" and bad feathering. Interesting. Thanks for the info. I have yet to have a friz, but eventually would love to add a couple.

Ohiki Mamas and babies...

Cute.

If you are real concerned about air cell size hatch them upright in cut down cartons if possible.

By the way..... SC?????? I will no longer

you. lolol... This set of 3 dozen eggs coming I am told they are so fragile I am to NOT touch them except to candle at day 7. I was told that they are so fragile that the embryo will not handle much movement at all except for my turner (the cradle of my Brinsea).

I guess this will be a good test of Red vs. Blue yea? first batch was red, second will be blue.....

Toria says "I don't care, just give me sisters and brothers!!!!!"
..
I love that pic!!

By they way I tend to be more red than Amy, I just can't leave a hatch to itself, and even help chicks under the Broodies sometimes.

If I see movement and no pipping then I will help esp if it's past day 22.
I have to say, my line with assisting is they have to pip themselves and be pipped for 18 hours before I will interfer. The only time I can even imagine myself "pipping" for a chick would be if I knew it to have been internally pipped for 24 hours with no external and then it's still iffy.

How many did you loose at day 7 candle, how many at day 14, and give final hatch from lockdown to see if or what might have gone wrong. Any that aren't pipped by day 23, open and find out how developed they are.
If your numbers are below normal we will need type and model of incubator, temp settings, and humidity. Your how evelvation and source of eggs can make a difference too.
I started with 13. 2 Sultans were clear, one Sultan had a blood line and 1 EE was clear. At day 7 I had 9 viable fertile eggs showing veins. I am really sorry if I word this incorrectly. I am such a newbie to hatching! at day 14 I had about 6%weight loss air cells were good on all but 1. 1 had not changed at all as was really small. (another Sultan egg) day 17 Weight loss was about a total of about 9% of the beginning weight. air cells still to me look small on a few, but over all the rest look good I would say 5 look good 2 so so, 2 I bet wont hatch. I have been running 99.7-99.9 degrees. I had the humidity at 45% at first and then decreased it to 35% on day 9 or so. It had dropped to 10% for 2 days by mistake, but I brought it back up to 25-30%, as I didn't think the air cells were big enough. temp held steady from day 2-17 (today). I will be pumping up the water and putting the eggs on paper towels and removing the egg holders and taking off the cradle tomorrow am. I have a Brinsea Eco 20 with automatic turner brand new. This is my first hatch.

I've had about a dozen incubators from homemade to tabletop foam to GQF and Brinsea cabinets and I've found the Eco 20 to be the easiest and most sanitary hatcher I've ever used. I don't incubate in mine, just hatch in it since I run staggered hatches in my cabinet, but as long as you use blotting paper or even paper towel as a well wick, and insert a tube for filling the wells, it's next to impossible to do wrong.

will that help? what does that do to put them in a cut down container? that is totally do able. I only have 7 eggs in the Eco20.
It will help prevent any excess fluid from leaking into the air cell when (if) they pip and lowering the chances of them aspirating on the fluid. It's not fullproof, but it can help. If the egg is laying on it's side and has extra fluid but the air cell is big enough for them to pip into, after they make the pip the excess fluid can leak into the air cell.
