She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

I'm down for the shipathon. Never shipped before, but it'd be a fun way to learn how! How do you go about being a part of that?
Chooks -I'd love some of your BLRW eggs, your birds are BEAUTIFUL

Awesome. What are you raising(besides a beautiful daughter)? And thanks again for the compliment, all we've done so far is keep them alive. lol How many eggs would you be looking for?
I've never shipped eggs either, but from having them shipped to me I have learned:
Individual bubble wrap for each egg
packing material all around so they can't move inside the first box
first box goes into a second box that is big enough to leave space on all sides for packing material
Packing material on ALL sides, between inner and outer box.

I think this last step would have made a big difference in the shape of our eggs. The first shipper individually wrapped the eggs, but only used one box and there was no padding at the front/back of the box.
Second shipper used two boxes and individually wrapped, but there was no space in between the front of the boxes, so no padding, even with two boxes.

I think the general idea is make sure there is plenty of paddingfor each egg, and that the eggs can't move around inside of the box, then make sure there is plenty of padding in between the two boxes so that shock can be absorbed.

Does that sound about right, experts?

Russian Orloff and Blue Wheaten Ameraucana. Down to 5 BWA out of the 13 she sent.

By the way, shipped eggs have a higher rate of dying during lockdown, too. So don't count your chickens before they are hatched!

Your gardens sound great!

I had big plans for lasagna or BTE gardening, but could not get enough bio matter to cover the garden with more than an inch or two. So it looks like I'm going to let the big sections lie fallow this year, and keep adding any organic matter that I can find. I can harvest my comfrey this year, and will have grass clippings, chicken manure and straw. Will need to get on the list for some wood chips from a tree company.

Oh, wow. Those are pretty birds. I love the coloring on the BWA's. Hopefully we will get at least a few out of this hatch! I'll hope for you, too, while I'm at it.

My back is envious of your fallowed ground. I am in way over my head(as usual). I am also planning to till up a few hundred SQFT for field peas and okra for a friend. We'll see about that! The soil we ordered wasn't quite enough to fill all of our beds, so I've been out in the woods digging up topsoil and leaf mold. Luckily, the chickens gave us all the fertilizer we needed last year, so we are good there. We'll be starting a vermicompost operation soon, too. And here I am hatching chickens, lol.

I just keep telling myself that next year will be less involved.

Hey guys! Thought I'd stop in, say hey..
Thursday will be day 7 on my shipped eggs. I started hand turning them after 2 1/2 days on the tilted egg turner (hand spinning). I have a better light now, so I may try to candle a few on day 7, see if I can tell how the air cells are doing. My other eggs are doing great..good development.
My hens have been laying like crazy.. it kills me to make these into omelets, but my incubators are full.

You're buying eggs to set when you have beauties like that in your back yard? I'll have room in my incubator in a couple of weeks...full right now

That could be it, Turk... are the pures they started with come from same flock?

This is one of the reasons they say not to breed brother and sister... breeding back to father or mother is better as 50% of their DNA is different while full sisters and brothers have the same exact...
Is it a danger in the first generation, or does it take a while? This is one reason we got that Foley Roo. We are breeding him to our stock from slackwater and the hens that came with him with a few cockerels from slackwater.

What did you get from Foley? I got a couple SLW and this is one of my first hatchlings.

Usually it takes a while, but it's best not to if you can avoid it... crossing different lines can bring up new issues as well... so weigh your pros and cons of each and go with what feels best for you... :)

If you can safely, yes... and the sooner the better... if you do it, best to do it with the first few days of hatching or first day... once adults, it's just messier, plus their transition at getting comfortable with the change is longer...

Nice looking olive. It would need a really big pitter, though!

Cross that one with BCM again and those hens should lay really nice dark olive. I bet this one will fade a couple of shades over the next couple weeks, like my olive egger did.

Idk... that's what was said about the BCM, but they stayed nice and dark from tiny pullet to full size...
