No brinsea have a farm innovatiOn styrofoam bator. I want a brinsea but my wife ordered the bator for me so I'll use this one until my girls make enough to pay for another one
Sorry, had my incubators/people mixed up! lol I have questions about farm innovations though... going to put them into my next post.....

Well I love a challenge! Just like I did with the chicken eggs before I attempt to hatch them, I will read & read & read and then re-read it all. Are the call ducks super tiny when they hatch? You're really killing me! I can't wait. I really hope they imprint on me too!! Do you have any pics of the baby ducks you guys have hatched??

Oh mercy girl, I have loads of pics of my duckies, I think I take pictures of them almost daily. I had the sweetest conversation with them last night. I kneeled down beside their pen and they came over to the fence and just talked my head off for a half hour. Quack, quack, peep peep, back and forth. It was so cute.
So here are just a couple of my favorite baby pics.

And me feeding them peas. (crack for ducks!)

Ruby I have some pics from tonight.

Very cute! I love that she is taking good care of them!

So Microsoft Patch Tuesday updates took down my camera PC and I can't even remote into it. I had four poults last night with more on the way, and won't be there to see them for 36 hours.

Dangit, I missed it! Hubby and I had a discussion about the camera that I want and I think he has talked me into the whole DVR security camera system, so we can actually use it to monitor around the house while we are away. Stopping on my way home from work to look at some, so we'll see.

I woke up to a pip!!!!!

Ok, honestly, I got up at 4:30am and checked! I heard peeping & he was rocking! When should I start playing youtube baby chicks for him???
Yeah!! I thought it was my dog that woke me up at 4:30. Must have been your chick! LOL

I have a problem!

The last couple of days, my incubator has been "low temp" alarming occasionally. I go check it, and it eventually goes back up. It woke me up this morning around 5:30am beeping, and I couldn't get the temp back above 97. My dog (or Ruby's chick! lol) had already awakened me at 4:30 and I had just fallen back to sleep when I heard it beeping, so I know it hadn't been beeping long. I assume my heater is failing. I grabbed the heat lamp and aimed it above the bator, emailed into work that I'd be late, and drove to Rural King to look for a new incubator. I thought they stocked Hova-bators, but they didn't have any. All they had was Farm Innovators 2100 (still air) and 2200 (with fan). But those are both Styrofoam, and I really didn't want one, so I decided to try TSC. On my way to TSC, I went back by my house and it had stabilized, so I turned the heat lamp away from the bator, but left it on in the room, thinking maybe the heater won't have to work so hard to keep up. Also upped the house a/c thermostat for the same reason. So on my way to work, I stopped at another feed store and they have the FI 4200. Its plastic, not styro, so I'm considering it. Haven't been to TSC yet, but I think they only have LG, so I was hoping to avoid that.

I'm on day 16, so at this point, I could just make a hatcher from an old cooler or something. I think I have all the parts I would need. Then I could order a replacement heater for my bator for next time, or even order a better one (maybe a Brinsea, if I can find a good deal, or a spare kidney). Or I could bite the bullet and buy one today. The 4200 would be my choice at this point.

Some TSC around here carry FI, but not every store. I would call ahead. They are all overstocked on 9300s, but you know how I feel about those...

Not exactly what happened to me but I was in a predicament where I needed an incubator ASAP. I went to my local TSC and they only had LG9300 still air. I did buy it just to get me through the day. Then I went on amazon.com to look. I ended up getting the Brinsea with next day shipping (which was only $5). So the next day when that came in, I returned the LG to TSC. So if yours totally crapped out and you needed one asap, you could always pick up one just to get you through until you buy the one you really want. Then return it. Just wanted to give you a backup plan to think about.

A lot of the TSC s only carry the FI s in store. I know ours does. I would definitely stay away from that 9300 LG....lol

altitudes affect on eggs or any thing simply put is barometric pressure greater at sea level than it is at higher altitudes so things expand a little as they get higher I would not think that eggs would expand that much at 5 or 6000 ft. coming from 600 feet however at 30000 ft it would explode also barometric pressure changes with different air masses and can change even at high altitudes depending on if its hot or cold. air molecules have the same amount of oxygen at higher altitudes there just larger so more molecules are needed to achieve the same tasks like staying alive. be careful sidewing I wouldn't make the holes that big . a hole or two the size of a drinking straw should the trick.
Great points BYC910. The high altitude thread says that eggs from sea level are actually more dense or less porous. So when they go to altitude like mine at 5k ft they are too dense for enough oxygen to get into the egg to displace the O2 being created by the chick. This makes complete sense to me since I was loosing so many after day 17 when they are really putting out C02. I did put a few too many holes in the bator. I can plug them as I test, but I'm quite sure my previous hatches suffocated on O2 so I'm erring on the side of oxygen. My temp is staying solid and my humidity is at 40%. I may plug a hole and bring that humidity up a bit.

Congrats! I hope the rest of it goes well for you.

Oh my goodness!! It looks like those duckies are posing for the camera!! They are beyond adorable. Now let me ask you, those are ducks you hatched? The ducks I had lost their mom to a raccoon when they were a week old. I thought they were pretty traumatized because they were scared to death. I had them for about 2 weeks. And they did start getting better with me but I could never take just one out. They would all flip out if they weren't together. Even when I would change their water (like 10xday!) they would get scared. So, are they less skiddish if you hatch them yourself? Thanks for the pics! I love them!

Yea, they are pretty adorable. Thanks! Yes, I did hatch these 4, along with one turkey, back in March. They are almost 12 weeks old. And they are joined at the hips! Never too far from each other. While in the brooder, they hated when I pulled one out for pictures! Flip out is a good description. They aren't "scared" of me now, and they will run toward me when go toward them, but still don't want to be held. They don't mind me rubbing their bills or necks while giving them treats, but that's about it. I think ducks are just that way, unless you have house ducks. I know they love me though. lol

What's up with your hatch????????
