She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

After setting my last batch at 8:30 pm, I said no more evening settings! Lol too confusing! But I'd do it tomorrow afternoon.

Pretty green eggs though! Best of luck for a great hatch!
Thanks!

Is he showing off for the girls already at 8 weeks?? Lol

You know how teenage boys are.

that's not hard to figure out set on Friday hatch on Friday lock down Tuesday I set on Saturday lock down on Wednesday . were the eggs on a auto turner. I like the way they are supported I wonder did you follow Amy's hatch she stopped turning on day 14 .Is that right Amy day 14
I did a few things different this time because of my altitude at about 5k feet. I opened the air vents the whole time and increased my humidity to about 50% for most of the incubation. I stopped turning yesterday at lockdown. If I don't turn them then the heating element above will heat the top of the egg about 4 degrees hotter than the bottom. If I let them turn then they get cooked evenly on both sides and I feel better about that. We will see though. These are shipped eggs from 1,300 miles away and they come from almost sea level. I'm going to add a fan to my incubator after this hatch.

I would love to make my own incubator but i cant seem to get hold of any Styrofoam boxes for now.
On Breeds - I want Olive Eggers with Frizzled silkie feathers and no Aracuna beards, or silkie crests. This will take a lot of mixing and be a very unique Bird. I also want the same looks in a Chocolate egger. I am making a start trying for eggs from these 2 :
I use a very thick styrofoam from shipped frozen meat and it works great. You can ask restaruants and grocery stores if they have any. You could also check craigslist and local pet shops.

The only thing red about me is my neck
Redneck good morning!

Yeah right! I cant afford that thing right now. I wish I could have because that's what I would have started with.

On a good note....my neighbors who complain about the rooster, asked if we had gotten rid of it yet because they just got back into town last night and my daughter was like nope he is still back there. But they were happy because they did not hear him at all this morning. Crow Collar: 1, naggy neighbors: 0. LoL!!!! But they don't know that there is a second rooster or for that matter 7 Roosters all together on my property!!

They would have a freaking heart attack.

Good to know they work.
Best incubator ever!

Just found this Brower model, but the reviews aren't stellar. Anyone here ever used one? I know there are some here that use the old Browers. This one is all plastic and dishwasher safe!

And speaking of homemade incubators.... I was out in our warehouse and there's an old metal desk about to be thrown away. I was looking at the drawer unit on one side and wondering if I could make an incubator out of it. Looks like it would come completely off the desk itself. Thoughts?

(yes, its laying on its end, on the floor, I rotated the pic... no need to tilt your head...

I like the drawer receivers you could put shelves in those spots. The depth looks good. Would you still need to insulate it though? I have thought a fireproof filing cabinet would make a good incubator too.

I pulled a plastic air deflector out from under my daughter's car's front bumper last night and caught myself thinking of ways to put it to use in the coop. Seriously...it's like a mental condition.

HAHA should have put the ball on his back, maybe would have cushioned the fall! LOL

I think I'd have to take it apart to actually see if it would need further insulation, but hubby has this wonderful, thin hvac insulation stuff. I think it would work great. Have to build some kind of door too, and I would have to have glass, so I could see what was going on! The cutout in the back looks great for wiring, etc. Gonna have to get him to come look at it I guess.

Today is trash pickup day at my house. There's a house a few away from me that the owner passed away a couple of months ago. His children have been cleaning out the house. Out for the trash was a Styrofoam box. Hubby called me an told me to look at it on my way out. I saw it yesterday on my way in! I think it looked like one of those coolers that they ship cold medications in. That was the only part that stopped me from grabbing it... worried maybe I couldn't sterilize it well enough... Yep, definitely mental!

The frizzle is a hen and silkie a rooster.
On assisting I'm a deep Red,
- Our first pet chook was a cull - she was blind with a crook neck but she was a much loved pet for the 4 years we had her.
So i will keep a chick alive as long as i possibly can.
Styrofoam boxes: Pet stores, pharmacies (no worry about contamination, as everything is very well packaged, even vaccines are in sterile bottles), possibly grocery stores. All are destined for the trash, so they should be happy to be rid of them.

I have been so bad. We had a neighborhood cleanup and someone put out one of those thick fisher price kids play houses and I almost grabbed it for a coop for a breeding pen. Now that's redneck! I constrained myself though.

Your husband is rad. My wife is like "when did those eggs get into the incubator? I thought you were done?".

I told her "You don't choose the chicken life, the chicken life chooses you".

I definitely would have grabbed the play house!! Would have been easy to hose out.

Oh, its all his fault! He started this by accepting chickens from his sister. His ultimate goal is cows though, so I think when I gave in on some ducks and chickens, he thinks he will get me to cave on some calves. I'm not there yet...

That's where I'm headed! I want a pair of mini Jerseys. If we had the land right now they would be in our yard. My wife likes the chickens for the boys, but of course I get carried away with whatever I do and now I have 4 breeding pens planned. It's just how I do things. But I have always wanted a farm/homestead.

I think I'm going to stick with chickens. I tried rabbits last year, but all of my spare time was spent with the chickens and I didn't have time for the rabbits, so I sold them and turned their hutch into brooder #3. I have limited time, and chickens are low maintenance, so that's all I need

Yea, chicken math can be painful... but sounds like you are well on your way!
