That is the most awesome chicken nugget I've ever seen.  As pleasing to the eye as it is, I bet it's equally useless as a functional layer!  I bet someone put a LOT of work into a breeding program to create that masterpiece!

My chicks are so funny! I introduced them to mealworms today. Well only one chick was brave enough to bite, literally. That chick ran up & down the brooder with the worm hanging out of his beak, over a dozen times! Back & forth. I don't know if he was excited or not sure what to do with it. But he made quite the parade up & down the brooder!

Hi guys just checked emails and read about Colson's little Ted it's was so sad .after all he went through with him . not even going to try to read tonight .I picked up enough from email to reply to Amy. I tried rice and popcorn and a silica dry pack from pool chemical bucket . rice and popcorn did nothing .The silica pack lowered the humidity about 2% In about thirty min. but It was old and I had saved it from last year to try it this year. It worked a little. best bet is to get the Incubator close to a dehumidifier or AC unit. depending on the incubator and the size of the vents Its hard to say how close you would need to be to either one. humidity here has been running from 50% to 68% on average I locked down 18 last night the sponges and pans are in but no water yet. They were in the bator when I had the heat spike .15 look fine but that doesn't mean they are. I'll know tomorrow or Saturday . If I get live chicks you get pictures

So all the duck eggs still look alive and well. The oldest dues out to hatch tomorrow is thumping his shell, I feel it when I candle lol. The second dues to hatch is now in it's "lockdown" phase as well. Have high hope for them all

Temp problems came late. I believe the controller is going out on my unit. Had to keep a small heat lamp above the bator to maintain temp. I think low humidity was too low for the bantams. The polish did fine.

That's right they were right towards the end. Sorry about the late quitters.

I have yet to get over 50% hopefully this time. Lockdown on tuesday!

Sorry busy night last night.
It's the LG with the fan in it, I'm not sure about the model number. I have checked my thermometers/ hygrometers for accuracy but have not monitored air cells. We are not a high elevation. Temps from my last hatch ran 99-100 though they do bounce as high as 101 occasionally. They were a little higher the hatch before because I didn't know my thermometer was off.

I've hatched OE from my own flock, CCL, and BLRW this year.

Did I miss anything?

My first hatch was, not this one. I opened everything that didn't hatch this time, even though I didn't know exactly what to look for. 5 of them quit about day 19 which is when the first chick hatched.

I use a temp gun on my eggs to make sure the thermometers and thermostat are working correctly. If you have one you might double check with it. Last guy came through this thread used his temp gun finally and realized his eggs were at 103 degrees.

Cooked something like 75 eggs total.

ooo ooo ooo the mutt is starting to pip, it's dimpled up, not a proper hole yet but a good upward dimple. Right on schedule is this little one!

Sorry, I didn't read this before I made my reply about the splayed legs. I don't have any experience with this. I wish crazychickenlady was around because she knows a lot about that. But she's been AWOL for awhile. I had mostly buff silkies hatch this time. One white hatched. I can definitely see the difference with the buff. They are a warm peach color. I was googling to see what buff polish look like and I came across this pic. I had to share because this chicken is so awesome!! Is this considered a buff polish frizzle??

Forgot to ask yesterday about my eggtopsy, the chick had obviously quit about day 19 or a little earlier but it had a very bulbous head, is that normal development for day 18/19? When I touched it the eyes bulged. Also the yolk sac was very small compared to photos I've seen of other people's eggtopsies, the belly was very dark and looked as though the organs where coming out the yolk/belly button area. Don't really know what I expected to see but could it of been bacteria? I dint clean the eggs at all but some did have a few smears of poop or whatever on them. I didn't really worry about it much at the time because I thought they would either hatch or not. Now I want to be able to improve my hatches or at least stop chicks dying so late into the brood.
I understand that sometime these this just happen but any advice would be great.
The one egg that I had serious doubts about because of dirt and being left out the nest for a while was the 1st to pip.

SC I have a Marans question for you that I'm nervous to ask over on the KFC thread.

This is a good question for Alaskan too.

I have a nice looking cuckoo Marans that came from a show breeder. A winning show breeder. Not saying this gal is a show worthy bird, but she is nice and was kind of pricy. I was told that she came from a very dark egg. The breeder in these parts has a good reputation. JPS Poultry. She has feathered shanks.



I was thinking to user her sexlinked super powers to raise a bunch of BCM hens to put to my BCM roo next season. All pullets would be solid genotype right? (I do have 1 maybe 2 other BCM hens 6 weeks old.) Chicks from this hen would give me laying pullets by spring(ish).

I know the cross can and most likely will lighten the egg but I could cull for that. Knowing (hoping) she came from a dark egg could still leave me with some nice dark layers. I would mark these birds and I could cull them all out of my program if they are light.

But here is the big question. Do I want to avoid cuckoo genes in my flock at all costs if I ever want to sell my eggs/chicks to serious breeders?

That's interesting. I have seen a couple mice venture into a coop of RIRs. It's not a pretty site. I can see it being useful in a situation like that, but 95% of the time it just gets a mouthful of food stolen.

It is entertaining. They look like a guilty kid caught with their hand in the cookie jar when they get something.

I asked a similar question in the other thread because I wanted to darken my cuckoo eggs. They pretty much said that it would probably work, but if you were serious about BCM not to mix the birds. They love you, though Alaskan can probably answer genotype questions. I honestly have no idea. That is a beautiful cuckoo, BTW. I'm curious about the leg color and hackles. Mine are all black, white, and grey with almost white shanks
