She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

I am the outspoken ring leader of insanity on this thread, but

I don't do leadership. I make a heck of a minion, though.
You rarely post, but when you do you make it count

So, thanks to my handy-dandy chicken scheduler spreadsheet, I have figured out how to have 217 birds processed by Dec 22, no more than 76-96 in brooders at one time, 68 hens laying by the end of the year and 106 laying by Jan 22. Business plan back in action...

Now I just have to create enough run space for 226 young chickens, which shouldn't be a problem!!

Now I just have to come up with 288 eggs between now and Aug 29.

I've been through that list before, and believe it or not, the next nearest is 2.5hrs away. So its either 10hrs of driving, or 5hrs of driving and 9hrs of waiting there...but you're right, its a possibility. I like the new plan, fewer trips, more birds sooner, and my layers reach 6 months old sooner too. The new plan has me deferring any new sets until Jul 16, so I have until Aug 6 to get all the additions in place...lots of time...

Planning's a pain. My spreadsheet grows more complex every year, then not being able to source hatching eggs early enough throws a wrench in. Or like last year when my local turkey processor retired in August...

Oh yeah, that must have sucked!! Right now I am getting 5-6 eggs a day, and my plan is to set 96 every 3 weeks + 1 day, so I may end up setting every single egg, including the X-Large and Jumbos...that's just nuts. But if I can get this caponizing down, it becomes more plausible that birds processed at 14 weeks or under may still end up being acceptable to customers. That gives me some leeway. Also, I am assuming a 90% fertility and 90% hatch rate...at least hatch rate should get better (fertility rate has been pretty consistent so far). Then there's the roo versus hen variable...not to mention potential environmental issues.

But what is nice is if I change anything in my spreadsheet, it ripples to everything else, so I can see bottlenecks well in advance.

Sitting in my chair having a lazy evening, catching up on some threads and look out my window to see this adorable little baby.
Momma was too quick to get a pic of her, she darted off the other way. But they are really abundant this year!

Silkie, your a great kid, and a great addition to the thread. Please don't take this the wrong way. The average age of Sarah's thread is about 14. The average age of this thread is older than your parents. We are going to talk just a little differently to each other than BR talks to Peeps. We're not doing anything obscene, but we will ambiguously try to make each other laugh. Neither of us said anything blatantly disgusting. We save that for the PMs:thumbsup

How on earth do you know the average age of the posters on a thread?
