I went out early this morning and saw Betty was still in her sleep trance, so I replaced the golf ball with little Solo.  Stayed in the coop cleaning for probably half an hour and then all of a sudden Betty went totally ballistic.  She was flapping, screaming and trying to kill little Solo. Now I'm thinking she kept pecking the other chick's shell as it tried to hatch, exposing tons of membrane so it shrink wrapped.

So Solo is in the house in her little condo.  She seems healthy so far, eating, drinking, pooping and constantly cheeping.  I wadded up a washcloth under the ecoglow so she can snuggle next to it.

Hope I find some other chicks soon!
My BCM broody did the same thing. I found half zipped chicks DIS. I will be breaking them from now on

I do use medicated feed. Just because I want my chicks to build up some resistance to cocci. The people that lived on this property last year had chickens here, so I don't know how much the ground is infected. But I don't think you can ever call eggs organic if you used medicated feed, is that correct?
Because there feet can get caught??? I've read with certain fowl, it's best to not use wire so they can pick at their feces and get double the dose of medicated feed. (Peafowl) Don't know if this applies to chickens, though.

I always do medicated start and grower.

I think I'm going to dunk her in cool water and put her in a wire cage to try and break her again.  Tonight I'll put her in the grow-out box to keep her away from the nest.  She's 2 1/2, never been a mom, and she needs to just go back to being a layer!

Thanks Bantam.  I'll pick up a feather duster when we go to the store later.  My last one got so old it molted.....

Hahahaha!!!! Do the boob thing until then!!! :lau

Of course I will update about the sebrights. Just hope her girls lay well this week.

What ever happened with the eye injured chicken?

I keep going back and forth. My heart wants to give him/her a good home, my head doesn't want the hassle of quarantine and possibly infecting my flock. Thanks for asking.

I started typing necropsy, changed to autopsy as so many people are more familiar with that term.  Necropsy by definition is autopsy performed on an animal, so it's just semantics.

No matter what stage of life, from dead in shell to dead after a full life, it's a useful tool.  I had an old hen who just declined from what I thought was old age.  She was around 7 (before I started raising commercially) and it turned out she had ovarian cancer.  There was nothing I could have or would have done to extend her life, but I may have ended her life more humanely had I known.

Good to know! Thank you!

I have heard that medicated feed can't be used on waterfowl, but I use chick and turkey starters with Amprolium interchangeably with non-medicated for my turkeys and chickens.  Only difference is that I do not use Corid (amprolium) in the water if using medicated feed.

Cocci is a real concern here for the first several weeks.  Our climate is moist and all my birds do get it, amprolium helps prevent losses while they build resistance.

I do not use any feed or supplement with antibiotics.  Those are reserved for the true medical emergencies.

I read that waterfowl can't have medicated feed because they eat too much and can I overdose.

Nice. The one in the top photo with it's head to the bottom left looks like a cockerel if it's 11 weeks, but don't put money on it.

Little Solo has better feathering on his/her legs than my full BCM. She (hope it's a she) should end up looking like a black Ameraucana with feathered legs. My luck it will be a rooster and end up dinner.

I start my chicks using game starter. When they transfer from the brooder pen at about 4 weeks to the grow out pen I give them one 5lb bag of the manna pro medicated starter, to prevent cocci. I have not had any birds exhibit coccidiosis yet. I really dont want tainted eggs or meat. Living in a ver hot and very humid area I would imagine cocci to be a problem. That is the only medicated feed they will get in their life time.
