She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

Sally, I competed in pointing dog competitions (field trials). I started out with Irish Setters 'cause that was Dad's chosen breed. Several years later I switched to English Pointers.
Thats awesome, I had an irish setter when my older sons where growing up, she was beautiful! Then I bought my first Springer and it was all over LOL or should I should say "now all over my bed!"

Did you candle? Candle and look to see if the air cell is drawing down. If it is then they may just need more time

Draw down as in less circular and more oval? I candled before lockdown and didnt see any movement so I am not holding my breath.

Its been a horrible few days and just want to throw everything at the trees :(

I treat the eggs normal and turn them on side if air cells are healed. If still jiggly carry on side turning gentle ;) I never hatch upright because I have had chicks pip lower end and die because of that. Plus if you read in the hatching 101 article I wrote it explains the natural position for hatch in more detail. ;) I know a lot of people hatch upright in cartons, I havent done it since I lost my 2nd chick and I did my research, makes no sense if you loose a chick, there is a reason the big hatcheries lay eggs down to hatch, its very cool to research the subject of incubation in detail, not hearsay but educational articles and abstracts that actually explain everything.
Thanks! I've never hatched upright in cartons but I hear it a lot. I'm getting ahead of myself, I just set this week! Hopefully some will have healed cells and won't be a problem to lay down. I'll stop tilting early and lay those down so they have a little extra time to get into position.
Woke up just in time! THIS NEVER GETS OLD no matter how many chicks you hatched!! :ya :hugs Teeny CurlySues! aka HarmonyAnns Serama.... Love her new tiny Roos, they are making such cute littles! One problem with them is she is getting more straight than frizzle, they are so sweet looking! ps... ignore the blue circles around the bottom, I had two sets of eggs in and I hand roll these tiny eggs. When its lockdown its quicker to see who is who and grab them out. I marked air cells on day 16 because they hatch anywhere between day 19 & 20, as you can see the eggs are all different sizes and the bigger ones will hatch tonight into tomorrow. Serama take some time to learn how to incubate.
:jumpy :jumpy :jumpy So happy to hear from someone who hatched a lot that it "never gets old"! It's so exciting!! If you need to smile, watch an egg hatch!! Congrats!!

How can life not make a person smile! even ugly caterpillars made me smile when the kids "hatched" them! We were stuck like glue watching them!

Great vid and congrats!! I was hoping it would "get old" someday... So you are telling me I'm addicted for life?? :D I will try seramas some day!! One question, I know you explained the blue lines, but is it marker? I had read that marker was harmful, and I've always used pencil, but it apparently doesn't bother them, huh. Any thoughts on that?

Day 8, incubation of 6 eggs that were laid the morning I set them.
Just candled all 6. Air cells (assuming the light area is the air cell) take up about 1/2 the area, and are all located on the small end.
No visible veins...light brown shells from Red Sex-links
WHAT GIVES?

(I told my mom and since she's so used to my chicken talk, she said "he pipped"! Lol
That's him??!! Seriously cool!!
That would be too cute! Maybe me and the baby but the kids are a few years older then my avatar pic and that would so not be "cool"!

Amy, quick question, how soon do you move them to the brooder after hatch? Like 30 mins, an hour, right away??
I thought this was WV's post...sorry (I'm so tired from no sleep, Amy I think you have family coming too, enjoy))@WVduckchick Have a great weekend! Enjoy the family!
That's my boy in there....lol
I movethem to the brooder once they start moving around and becoming active. If the are active in 30 after they hatch, then I'll pull them. If they lay there for an hour or two before becoming active then they stay in a couple hours.

This is just too cool!!!

I love breeding Springers! what breed? I cant sell my older girls yet alone put one down :( I cannot be called breeder lol

I dont weigh anything, if I had known to weigh and use local fresh eggs at first hatch I would have saved myself a lot of grief!
But there is why I started the Hatching 101, I was darned if I wouldnt try figure everything out about incubation to get good hatches and then I had to document everything or I would forget, I need everything written for reference, I am not a genius and the fact that I have an acquired white matter disease of my brain, makes my memory sporadic at times unless its something I have done over and over.

Are you candling down into the eggs from the top? It sounds like you are candling from the bottom.
