She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

These free ranging chickens of mine are something else. Not sure if I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, but I found Big Guy and one of the girls shacked up on top of the brush-hog with a tarp over it. Yesterday I found 5 eggs in that spot.
This morning I heard weird chicken noises, and when I found them, it was Punkin and one of the girls, in a little spot beside a tree, behind some spare windows (hubby's spare collection) and a wheel barrow leaning on the side of the tree. Its maybe a foot square spot they squeezed into! And one hen was watching, or maybe waiting her turn! Creative boogers they are!

and your doing all that work to build them a house sounds like time for rethink .

Now that it cooled down, interest in my EE culls has gone way up. 12 contacts, but so far no takers...two of them may be going to a local high school to scratch in the courtyard. Maybe I can talk him into a few bantams too.

I also took my pretty Salmon Faverolle/EE roo out of the pen and put him with the culls, and brought Son of Big Guy in for my junior. His colors and pattern are better than his dad's, and his conformation and leg feathering are excellent. Though he is all mutt, he is a pretty one. He's also docile, which goes a long way. Right now he's afraid of the hens. I will miss my fancy guy, but I captured the best of his genes in a couple of pullets that will be kept for next year, a gold laced pullet and a black/copper pullet. It was hard to decide between SF/EE, his son who is a pretty calico with great conformation (but he is an alpha temperament, not a good mix with Big Guy), and Son of Big Guy.

It was harder to sort my keepers than I thought it would be. I sold my white EE pullet with willow legs to a young boy, his brother selected one of the pretty black and white cockerels. I don't like these "Ameraucana type" EEs from purchased eggs, they are just too spastic.

The long legged ostrich cockerel, full brother and near twin to the one I am keeping, is in the cull pen. He did catch up to his brother in body size, he has better leg feathers, and he will probably be bigger than his father when mature. But he's still gawky looking.

The Cochin/EE hen's daughters are filling out nicely and scratching busily in the yard. I want more of these. They are very pretty and quite calm.

That is too funny. I still have me nest boxes closed off. I've been keeping an eye on my oldest female. She's 17 weeks. Saw her go into the coop alone today and when she came back out I ran and checked for an egg but nothing! Should I wait for the first egg to open the boxes?

the problem for me isnt what or how they use it nearly as much as how they Refuse to accept someone elses opinion. That typically tells me, they know it isnt 100% right, if theyre that deffinsive.

Exactly. Like there is only one way to hatch and you better hatch that way or else!!

Hahahahahaha!!!! :lau :gig thanks for catching that. A bacon bloody mary. Lol!!!! Man I am so bad at proof reading.

That sounds good!!

My pullets are cranking out some pretty little eggs now. I'm having a hard time telling who's laying what. I'm getting a pretty blue egg that does not belong to my EE hen. So, I think one of the BSL pullets is giving me a huge egg for her age, b/c last year's BSL gals lay more of an aqua or greenish egg. Was going to take a bunch of them to TSC poultry swap next weekend, but may not b/c I want to be sure to hang on to the ones that are laying the most and the best eggs. Have yet to figure out who they are. There are 3 sets of look alikes. I may just hang on to all of them, and eat the older slackers.

If any one wants to give some advice on an other thread, here it is. She has a broken blood vessel on a pipper. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/1020393/bleeding-egg#post_15825506

Your TSC has swaps? We finally got one down here our way. I am going to keep my eyes open for that!

If she's going in by herself, I think I'd open it for a few days and see what happens. Close it off if they try to sleep or poop in it. I think 17 weeks may be early for silkies though, but maybe not. Someone else can weigh in on that.

Is there a little spot behind your house, or under the deck where you can set up a couple of pallets to put your stuff on? Maybe even build a little storage building?
We have a ton of room, two storage buildings and half the chicken coop shed. He just likes things neat and tidy, while my "project stuff" tends to take on life of its own. I'll keep working on him.

since Listerine is about twenty five percent alcohol they might not do so bad . because alcohol evaporates so quickly and takes moisture with it . not sure what the other ingredients would do .one things is for sure they'll have kissing fresh breath if they hatch and maybe be a little buzzed too. fit right in at GNO . it seems like a lot of extra work to me . not something I would do . Amy you or Ruby need to see what their hatch rate is. I don't do FB

If you have a hobby lobby. pick up some peal and stick black felt .curt a hole a little smaller than the hole in your can and stick it to the top this gives you a better fit to your egg. makes candling easier .
Great idea!

X2. I'd open them up, pop in a golf ball, and let her scope out the area.
