She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

How about humidity?

Humidity is dependent on the air cells. So what you have now sounds good to start. Then when you candle on day 7, check to make sure the air cells are growing properly. Not to big, not to small. Like this:

Oh no!  I'm sorry for your loss too!  :hugs

X2! Hardest part of raising animals.

Their size looks good for being so young. On the first pic I was thinking "what's wrong, these look fine" and then I saw the over coloring with the other pics. Crazy how pervasive that comb is. I bet that dark boy will turn out nice. Don really knows his stuff. One day I'm going to pull all his Marans posts together.

I hope I don't lose any more.

I know I shared this but I was ask for how I made it and to make a page of instructions so here it is if anyone needs one!

A Twist on a 5 Gallon Spring Water Jug Gravity Fed Poultry Waterer

I needed a big waterer for our 26 meat birds desperately, then I saw the idea of this system on a google image search but after some thought, I realized that I needed to make a few changes, because when your a woman carrying a 5 gallon jug of water and flip it over you don't want to mess around trying to align anything, and I didn't want to mess up my water jugs either by drilling holes and adding any bolts, etc. The coffee container can move wherever it wants in that bucket and you can just flip the 5 gal jug into the bucket quick without having to fuss with all that weight in one hand! And its gravity fed of course. We have two water jugs, so I can carry one along to the meat birds to replace the other, then rinse and sun dry until the next day, repeat. Here is a link to a water jug if you dont use them from walmart or someplace already. I had asked for mine on CL in a general sales post, got three replies and ended up with freebies! Thats always a plus!
The site has several sizes and buy two get a discount, but again local CL works best, just type and ask!

I hope you don't, either. Odd to lose them at this age. Usually if they survive the first 2 weeks, they are fine. I hope the dark fella colors out well, I'm curious to watch him. The next batch is due this Sunday. You have any recent pics of yours? I think the two of us are going to have a neat comparison of quality breeder chicks vs backyard breeder chicks
Everything that Don predicted has happened

I put them out in the coop brooder and I'm worried the change in flora and fauna was too much for that one. I haven't had anything die in that brooder until now so I'm hoping it just thinned out the weak one.

I will try to get more pics tomorrow evening. I can sure tell the cockerels by now. Looks like I might be 5 and 5 pullet/cock right now.

Once again, Sally, you Shine!!! This looks like an awesome set up. I just may have to make one. Now... to find a free 5 gal jug or three. The coffee can inside is brilliant. I'm thinking that a little insulation, and a submersible aquarium heater would be just the ticket to make a freeze proof winter waterer.

I am so sick of MUD! only one coop and run is on a bit of an incline, our big Brahma feet are a mess!
Thank Goodness they dont stink like the meaties.

Oh man, it took your quote away again and I can't remember what the heck I was going to comment on!
I lived in FL for 5 years. The roaches are bad. And palmetto bugs are HUGE. Anyone that moves there should like lizards because they are everywhere! I opened the lid to the washing machine once and turned on the water and one ran right out! Nearly gave me a heart attack!
Free college? That is amazing and such a wonderful thing. Nowadays kids can't get far without some form of college.
NY has red tape all over everything! I'm surprised we can still go to the bathroom without a permit! Oh yeah, I remember what I was going to ask you before...what is the lake effect? I've never heard of that.
Very cool! Thanks for sharing!
Lake effect boils down to more snow storms because of the surrounding lakes. I'll spare you the jargon of cold air masses moving along warmer lake water and vapor collection yadda yadda yadda... surfice to say "more snow" lol Higher occurances of white out conditions especially closer to lake regions. No kidding on the red tape.....which politician was it that wanted to throw a methane emmissions tax on farmers for cow gas? He was probably from NY at one time....lol
I think it was probably a little high last time. I think it was 101.5 - 102 , that might be why i had zero hatch. Maybe try for more of a 100.5-101 this time.
If it's still air, generally 101-102 is where you get your best hatches, but that is with the temp taken near the top of the eggs. If it's 101-102 near the bottom, then I agree it's too high. I would definitely adjust though if you think it would help. Trial and error until you find what works.

I found cage free brown eggs here at Walmrt for 3.47. I sell mine for 3.50.

Good luck!

I have had a lot of family that quit cold turkey and stuck it out.

I'm glad that ended well.

We are still on the same schedule right? I set 7 SLW eggs under that broody I talked about last week. Tried to break her in cool water 3 times with no success, so I'm putting her to work.

I'm sorry WV.

I lost one of my Marans yesterday in the outdoor brooder. Not sure why yet. It was a pullet of course.

The rest of them look healthy and happy so far.
TY, I've gone a week, so

Sorry to hear about that Marans.

How about humidity?
Run 30/35 and check air cells to stay on target and know how to adjust.

you know thats a GREAT IDEA.... too bad these wont be sticking around that long muwahhahhahaa

Hate to hear that about the pullet. I always liked the mushroom hunting better than licking the stamps. The hills on the roller coaster weren't quite as severe... Ok, here's a few pics to make you feel better about your birds. 4 cockerels, three pullets. Three in front are all cockerels, overly colored one on the back row is as well. The one in the center that is very dark came from one of the older Davis hens. Keeping an eye on that one. He started with the more penguin look, and is staying black so far. Curious to see how his color turns out, but looks like the same comb fault will carry The ones that are almost totally black were penguin chicks. The overly colored and mossy ones were the very dark chicks. Exactly what Don said would happen with the dark chicks This picture is blurry, but I postd it to show the extreme mossiness , overly colored breast, and shafting. Same comb fault as well Feet feathers are very nice, but color not looking so good. Again, the black cockerel in this pic could be interesting Another blurry pic, but shows the extreme shafting on the breast I have a great trade for you in the spring :D
Are these the babies from the first marans hatch?

Yes, post pics!! Curious to see them, since SC talks about them so much! ;)
