She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

With stinkers in the bator, all bets are off and hands gotta go in, lol...

Yolks break down easier once they're warmed up... doesn't matter whether fertile/infertile/viable/quitter, etc... if you refrigerate your eggs, the yolks are firm when you crack them, but if you don't refrigerate them you will see it's harder to crack them open without the yolk breaking open...

I have noticed that befor.makes sense.

Aaawwwww !!!!! How cute!!!!
Yes...I am also thankful to not have found a smelly egg yet. When you egg Topsy are the yolks supposed to be intact???? I have notice before that mine have come out scrambled. ...but no smell. Just curious as to what is the norm for it.

I've never had a shipped egg that didn't have a scramble yolk after being incubated. I used to wonder that too. Because there was no way for me to check the yolk for fertility.

You'll not get a hand slap from me.  I consider candling to be a privilege of incubation:  I often start candling as early as day 2 - 3 to see if I can see subtle differences between an incubated egg and a freshly laid egg.  They have a certain glow about them!

so far everyone is doing good..total of 4 so far. These are my friends Cochin/ D'Anver crosses, I am hatching them for her as she lives just down the road and doesn't have a bator. I lost 6 before I found the two in trouble and realized what was happening. My Buff Cochin's should start hatching this week too...:)

can you candle and see that in any egg at all ?

Unfortunately, no... there is no way to see fertility for sure without cracking the egg open... easy to do with our own eggs, just open them til we see the bullseye and then start incubating, or stick them in and see if they develop... but with shipped, there's no way to do that without opening each egg... and just cuz 1 egg from a single hen missed getting fertilized, doesn't mean they all did...
This is why there's such a big debate over fertile/viable in shipped eggs... it all comes down to their word that fertility is good...

I buy alot of shipped eggs. Sometimes good results, sometimes not so good, just had 3 doz not so good I might have 6 total viable eggs that are developing. However the problem I found is that sometimes they are getting x-rayed.

Checking for fertility in an egg after being incubated is unreliable... the bullseye is really only visible before incubation...

Agreed! There is no way before incubation to check fertility....one egg that looks fertile after checking the yolk may not be fertile for the next egg the hen lays that you incubate.....I honestly think you just have to be lucky and hope for the best!

Sidewing would disagree!!! He has great hatches with shipped eggs with boxes not labeled at all..which means then more than likely the boxes are getting xrayed

So we should request a blank box? Not even fragile written on it?
My last hatch was horrible. Package was labelled hatching eggs on neon sticky labels and fragile was written all over it. I thought she was very thoughtful. Many didn't develop, another few quit. Total I got 3 chicks.
Suggesting for next ship?
