She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

I have a brinsea too and a couple times in my house someone must have glanced at it in between flashes and yelled out "mom, the incubator is off"....nearly gave me a heart attack every time!
That was my exact thought!
Just to make a recommendation that was made to me, if you can turn 5 x a day, it increased my hatch rate greatly.
Question, the breeder contacted me on day 19 of my silkie hatch, and told me not to be surprised if I had any sizzles hatch. (I was pretty upset because I paid a good amount of money for quality silkie eggs, not planning on those genes) but they all look silkie to me. Can you tell right away? And what's the difference between sizzle and frizzle?
That's my moms name! :) What was the breed that was referred to as a cross breed?
Lazy, yes, the door is open and that's exactly what I am doing! I start shaking the scratch and they run towards the run but stop at the lip (2x4 that they have to jump over). Then when I reach down to help them, they start running in all different directions! But a few are making the leap by them selves. Also, the squirt gun is working wonders with my cockerel! He actually bit my son the other day and that equaled 3 good squirts, then he doesn't even look out way. But he forgets and starts again the next day, so I'm keeping on him!

I've never really gotten into the frizzles, sizzles and frazzles cuz I can't have them... but I believe sizzles are Silkie based, frizzles are Cochin based and frazzles have 2 copies of the frizzle gene and have extremely brittle feathers... don't want frazzles for the most part cuz they end up more naked than anything... but sizzles are bred back into Silkies to keep the Silkie feathers, and frizzles are smooth feathered... from my understanding at least... someone correct me if I am wrong...

Oh, and you should be able to tell as soon as the feathers start coming in... they'll curl a lot...

And Ruby, Pyxis breeds Ayam Cemanis... that was the chick people called a crossbreed... she does have crosses, but that one was a non breeding purebred...

She's gonna be setting AC eggs (hopefully she gets more, lol) and will let us follow her hatch and learn more about AC's...

Did you see the thread where Beekissed used a heating pad to hatch eggs? The heating pad was in direct contact with the eggs like a broody hen would be and she made it a realistic nest out of dirt and shavings etc and lined it with feathers. It was pretty interesting!
That's cool.

Sweet!! Would love for you to allow us to follow your hatch, please? I know many here would be interested in your techniques/experiences and the breed itself...

My OH won't allow frizzles, he says they freak him out, lol... our Silkies look awful though... and they can see now!!

I'd like to add a couple frizzles and sizzles next year.

Sure! I'd be happy to do that. And happy to get some more info on the breed out there - last week a bunch of people in the What Breed or Gender is This forum tried to call one of the birds from my flock (a cull that I gave to a woman who desperately needed a chick to keep her lone hatchling company) a cross breed
hmm.png
They didn't know enough about the breed to make that call, but it really sucked to see my purebred called a crossbreed. He didn't even have any feather color leakage or anything. Not something I would use in my breeding flock, but certainly not a cross.

My silkies aren't looking too rough yet, although my rooster Einstein got caught in the rain the other day and he certainly had feathers matching his namesake's hair after that

Don't show your OH this, but here's one of my little juvenile frizzles. Still in need of a name:

Oh good. I'm not the only one...lol
Ok, my gardener quote didn't show up...anyway, I have to bribe mine back in after we are done ranging. Most of them are right there when they see the bucket or treat, but I always have two or three that have to be "herded" to the gate cause they run up and down outside the fence like likttle dummies...lol

That's my understanding of frizzle/sizzle. sizzle is just the silkie version of frizzle. I don't think I am famiiar with the term frazzle. That's good to know.

Assuming the forecast is wrong, Saturday's shaping up to be a great day--eggs, soccer tournament (daughter's team is undefeated), soccer party. If the tournament gets rained out, it'll be next Saturday, which sucks, 'cause that's when coach's baby shower is supposed to be...

Ruby, with my frizzle cochin, I could tell within just a few days that his feathers were growing curly, once the "real" feathers started growing.  I would expect a silkie to be the same?
Looking back through my pics, I remember sending one pic to my SIL and telling her I thought he was frizzle, and it was at 5 days!

It's been two weeks, all the feathers coming in look pretty straight, (I just checked them) but one does seem a little curly. I will take some pics today and you guys can tell me what you think.

Are you throwing the scratch through the doorway into the pen?  I can't imagine that that 2 x 4 would be high enough that they can't get over it!  Just get them to the door and toss the scratch into the run.  An other thing that will help immensely with chicken management, is to keep them just a little bit hungry.  I do not keep feed down for my girls all the time.  They get their FF in the morning, then they get some scratch in late afternoon, or if I need to get them back into the run, and they might get some more FF before dusk, depending on where and how they've been foraging.  A chicken who thinks she's hungry will jump through hoops for a bit of scratch!!

Yes, I shake it in through the door way. They have no problem hoping the 2x4 to get out. It's just going in. One will go in and then a group will linger right before the entrance if I try to scoot them in then they try to get away. But we are working on it. They are all young. They do have food all day, so maybe that's something to consider. And I'm so happy because my new batch of babies are piggies and already love FF at 2 weeks old! (My previous batches of chicks didn't care for it until 10-12 weeks old.).

Ok, thank you for the information. I don't know much about it. I looked into it a little when I wanted to do frizzled polish but I read you can not breed frizzle to frizzle without a chance of hurting the chicken (either the chick dying or being bare backed). So I decided against it. I will have to wait and see what happens with these chicks. One looks kinda curly.
And that's cool about the AC (I was wondering what that stood for). I know someone breeds them on the NY chicken lover board. It would be great to follow that hatch!

That's cool.

I'd like to add a couple frizzles and sizzles next year.

Well, depending on these chicks, you may get a couple!! Lol!

I did 7am, 11am, 2pm, 5pm, and 10-ish pm. Are you trying to turn once over night?

I sure am! That little egg is going right in the incubator. I'm gonna wait maybe a day or two to see if I get more to go in with it but if I don't I'll just be tossing some mixed breed eggs in to be its hatch mates.

Still tons of molting going on here in my layer flock, and my poor half blind hen that I'm trying to integrate into the cemani flock is having a horrible molt too. If she keeps going this way she might end up in the worst molt contest. At least the frizzles aren't old enough to molt yet - frizzles have the absolute worst molts.
OMG, I LOVE AC's!! I've wanted some ever since I saw them, that was a while back, but I cant afford what most breeders ask for a dozen eggs, lol. I've read up on them so much though, they are the coolest looking chickens. There was a breeder putting AC eggs up for auction on ebay the last time I looked on there and some of them went pretty cheap from lack of bidders but most of them got up in the hundreds of dollars before the auction ended.

It's similar to the Araucana tufting gene, but non-lethal... although it is looked at by reputable breeders as being poor animal husbandry to knowingly breed for frazzles... thus why your Silkies have Sizzle genes, they breed Sizzle to Silkie to get some of each and Frizzle to Smooth feathered for same... I think Frizzle to Frizzle is 25% smooth, 50% Frizzle and 25% Frazzle... or something like that... Frazzle feathers break super easy, like just picking them up... and they can't regulate their body heat at all... :/

I believe a frazzle is an upset frizzle:lau

My silkies are funny. They used to be the first to go into the coop at night. Now they are the last to stay out, but they have always gone in on their own.

And that's the worst thing about having the frizzle. I was so hoping for one! Then once I got it, I thought, aww crap, I can't breed them together! But as luck would turn out, I only ended up with the frizzle male. And he's so dang cute, I couldn't part with him for anything.

Final hatching report.. Third egg was DIS

Looks like he made it to about day 19. I went Red too late

but then I wouldn't have known what to do anyways

The other two are now in my bathtub with their Momma heating pad. Thank you all for your help!

I have more Lavender Orpington eggs that arrived yesterday and some Jubilee Orpington eggs that I will be setting soon
