She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

The weather here is so nuts. Last night it was 31ish, all the water bowls had a fair layer of ice on the top this morning. Today it's warming way up and going to continue to warm over night. Night lows are supposed to be mid 60's! I actually put the mph back into the coop last night for the chicks. Not more then a few can fit under it now but they mostly roosted right on top of it. I just took it out.

I think that one went DIS a while ago... and since it was laying on its side, the moisture loss continued and the membrane collapsed down as the liquid around the embryo dried up...

That does sound like a good explanation!

A fairy egg is also known as a "wind" egg or a "fart" egg. Most commonly, they are called "fart eggs". It's a small yolkless egg.
I would think candling an egg with an egg in it would make the smaller egg appear black, not white, but the perfect shape of the white mass is riveting to me.
OMG,I could not NOT eggtopsy that one. I would have to know, I would have to be able to document what I was seeing....lol Too much curiosity and oddity to let that opportunity go by.....lol Bring it to me, I'll do it! lol

Oh and I found this to help you visualize what I was talking about. Obviously I'm thinking the smaller fairy egg inside versus a fullsize egg inside a monster egg: http://www.backyardpoultrymag.com/how-a-chicken-lays-an-egg-inside-another-egg/

Can you blow some of that warm air up this way??? lol We are supposed to be in the 50's today, but the wind is so cold! Tonight is supposed to be 47 but then back to the 30's and droppinng tomorrow night.

Then don't... only do what you are comfortable with... :hugs for the ones that didn't make it, but you did good!!! Go sit with your new babies for a bit, it'll help you feel better... :)

I wish you lived closer because I totally would let uou do it! I am I guess afraid to do it because I wanted another yellow one. I will try and get more pictures tonight.

1. Once Thanksgiving is over and I have a handful or two of turkeys left, the chickens move into the turkey coop. This is so I only have to run one waterer for the winter, which is both difficult and expensive. And in really cold weather, under 15F, we need to carry water down a few times a day because even the heat tapes can't keep the waterers thawed.

2. Brooding in winter is an abject failure if the power goes out. It goes out for a while nearly every day around here, they built wall to wall subdivisions and tapped into 1960s rural infrastructure. At 75F it's not a big deal. At 20F it's fatal quickly.

3. Not much of a market for selling day olds this time of year in this climate due to the brooding in cold weather challenge.

I do plan to start setting as early as February, but I have to resist until then unless someone pays me to incubate.

makes total sense to me . I dread winter watering . since it's all by hand . I have found the one gallon waters work best easier to get the ice out of .

Used those last winter... brought them in at night and set them in our spare tub... thawed by morn and hauled them back out again... have to use rubber tubs for the ducks this year, might try it for all of them... still deciding, lol...
