We were posting at the same time! No way, really!! That's so sad, such a waste. I don't know if you read my post but last night I had no power and had to sleep with my chicks. I had one pack of those hand warmers left and I opened them and put them in the bed with me. They got super HOT. Like, the chicks wouldn't even go near them because they were to hot. Well over 100 degrees. I'm wondering if they damaged the eggs at all. I will definitely not use them again. I really hope all 4 hatch!!

I think with the amount of space you had between them they should have been okay. Plus the the packing should have dispersed the heat evenly. When they arrived they were cool. How long do they last???

Thank you. I think it's going to be awhile before the power comes back on. I called the power company and there is just a generic message that's says they are aware of massive power outages and for everyone to be patient. Luckily it's 60 degrees outside and my batch of 2 & 1/2 week old chicks seem fine with no heat. I had to bring all 3 boys (and the chicks) to my moms, so I could get them ready for school. We went to McDonald's for breakfast and COFFEE first and my son brought the chicks inside in a little basket and everyone that worked there was going crazy over how cute the chicks were. The manager called all the employees up front to see the chicks. My kids thought it was the coolest thing getting to show off the babies!

They lasted a little less then 6 hours. I was just really surprised how hot they were. I couldnt leave my hand on them!

That's awesome!!! I bet they did love it! My girls would have. Stella is super excited about hatching ducklings. She says they are her favorite. Lol!!!! 3 year Olds says some funny things I tell you.

they do get hot made for quick warming of very cold hands are you on a well ? wondering why you didn't do hot water ?

They are so cute!!
Our local grocery store sells quail eggs next to the chicken eggs. Does not say if they are fertile or not but I thought that was interesting to see them sold at a commercial grocery store.
They are looking great!

That's IS cool!
They are most often NOT fertile as they usually separate males and females for meat/eggs respectively. They only keep a few breeding cages for hatching, usually.

Never hurts to crack a few and check!

Well it's really Amy's fault every time I loose power! No, I'm just joking. It actually hasn't been to bad. This is the third time in a year. Not so bad. But I need to get a generator. Especially now that spring is almost here and I'll be hatching a lot and having newborn chicks. Has your humidity been better in the new incubators? You did get them up and running, right?

Last night was such a nightmare!!! We had a horrible storm. Power is still out. It went out at 12:30am. I had set eggs at 6pm, so I'm not really worried about them. They can warm and cool in early incubation with no ill effects, right? I've read about large hatcheries heating and cooling them before the heart start beating, I forget why they do that but I think they will be okay to get reset tonight.

But...I have 10 chicks that were only around 24 hours old. They started crying like crazy. No generator, so I brought all 10 chicks into bed with me. I couldn't think of anything else to do. They actually loved it! They snuggled up next to my skin and I put all the covers over them. They made that little trilling sound they make when they are happy and going to bed. But I barely slept a wink. I had my 1 year old baby on one side of me that kept waking and crying because the thunder and wind was so intense. Then 10 little chicks preening and snuggle on the other side of me all night. Got out of bed at 6am and drove them to my moms with the heat light. Oh what a night!!

Definitely buying a generator when I get my tax return!
