That's good to know.

Keep in mind these are Call duck eggs, not chicken... I think chicken eggs do better in auto turners than duck eggs on average... duck eggs do best being hand turned, but most do fine in auto turners as well... Calls are much more difficult, IMO... and hand turning them makes a huge difference...

I knew they would do best being hand turned, but I tried the turner first for convenience and also to see how big the difference would be...

Is that darker Marans egg from your other Marans or from the ones you got from me?

Adorable!! Lookit the fat little fluffy pudglets!!! :celebrate

Thank you. The only pain was hand turning them.

I hand turn most of my batches. It's not so bad because I'm home. I do 5xday. 7am, 10am, 2pm, 5pm, 10pm....not exactly but around those times.

Awe, babies!! :jumpy

I understand, and agree... I want mine to be the best I can get them... maybe I should have just scrapped them and gotten chicks straight from someone like PS like SC did, but honestly I love my original girls... and they're not junk so I have something good to work with... plus I am enjoying the challenge of breeding them up to higher quality myself...
Always hand turning is better than an auto turner... keeps the eggs in more natural position and more even heating from end to end rather than one end and most of the way down the sides... but it's just not practical for large batches or most peoples schedules...

It was because of a large hatch that I decided to hand turn in the first place. I had 42 eggs which ment a full turner, which put eggs right up beside the turner motor, in the first week I lost something like 6 and three were closest to that turner and that corner was running 2-3 degrees hotter, so I pulled the turner out and hand turned the other 36. I didn't loose another one after I started hand turning and 33/36 hatched. One hatched prematurely though, still had an active vascular system to the egg and a ruptured yolk sac. It literally shot out of the tip top of the egg like 4 hours after pip. I have never, and don't want to see that again.

I can completely understand that. I think there is a certain amount of satisfaction that would come from breeding hens up to higher quality. And from what I've seen, I think you are doing an awesome job. I'm sure I'll be bugging you and SC a ton when it comes time to decide on pairings and stuff.

I was determined to "catch" my new layer today. I kept running outside every half hour and of course, the one time I miss going out because I was putting the baby down for a nap, she laid in the run again! Still no idea who it is! :barnie

Anyway, has anyone heard of a grumbach incubator? They are super expensive new but I'm just curious if anyone has ever used one?
