Have you guys used Vaseline on your hatchings?? I would be a little Leary on using it, it's thick and could cause blockage. I think Plain water is just fine.

Have you guys ever used Vaseline?? I have never, just wondering if you were very successful with it. Perhaps it will be my next experiement.. LOL
Thanks for the coconut oil tip. Haven't needed it yet for chicks, but I always have some in the kitchen.
My silkies are adventurers. They range just as much as my others, and all but one roost with the others in the coop. Actually a lot of time they go in first so they can get the top. I do have one that perches on the side of my ground level nest box. And yes they are silkies, not bearded and all pretty like Ruby's so they can actually see better....lol Between winter erosion and them scratcing they have a spot that I need to fix in the run where one the silkies keeps sliding under the fence to get out.Did I read that correctly, it was Silkies that took off? WOW, that's odd, my silkes won't even leave the coop even if I leave the door wide open for them. And no your right they don't roost, they can't even fly off. Something must have scared them..
Interesting.I use it for my Calls... if it takes a while, might need to reapply, but if it dries it doesn't mummify the baby and if it sticks it flakes off intsead of becoming leather or cement, lol...
Me too. I had a banty come up missing last night. Expected her to be out there this morning but she's not. Tricky little chickens. Was hoping to check in and read that Ruby found the babies. I'm still hoping they turn up![]()
Hens leave their nest every day to eat, drink and poop. There's a study that cooling eggs once a day can mimic what happens on the nest and improve your hatch rates. Are you talking about them being cooled down for like 10 minutes??
I'll be honest not sure why people do that. I have never cooled down my eggs. Not even sure the purpose. Ducks nor chickens cool down there eggs. Ducks will bury there eggs to keep them warm and protected. and chickens well they never leave the nest. So there's no cooling down there either.
But I know some people do it.
Brinsea has that cooling feature as an optional setting on their incubators. I haven't tried it yet though.

Yes, they are silkies. With big crests too. And that's why I should have known better. But in all honesty, like you said, they never go far. They could roam the whole yard (which isn't even that big) but they don't, they stay right by the run, which is right out my back door. So something probably did chase them. Some of them don't even come out when I open the run door.
X2! I have a jar of organic coconut oil, I'll keep it out next week for my hatch.
Nope. But thanks for thinking of me. I'm coming to peace with it. I hope to get rid of some boys this week and then I'll contact a breeder that I've been dying to get some girls from, at least that's the upside to it.
I hope she shows up!!
