This is such a beautiful chick - half Wheaten or Blue Wheaten Ameraucana (mom) and half Black Copper Marans and it came out sort of a yellow and amber color with eyeliner - I definitely want to see it grow out. I'll post a pic when I can get a good one. Another hatched out from this same cross that is yellow with some black spots - looks like someone dabbed it with a paintbrush! That one is doing great and alert. The rest so far are mostly black, 2 that are same cross as above are really downy with big muffs and have a brownish tone to them, they will be interesting too. One is hatching from an Ameraucana egg now that looks to have some yellow down. I was expecting all to be mostly black, so I'm happy!

I would love to have some Marans again, I had gotten some barred rock from a farm up the road and lost all but one, I had them separated from my flock because you just never know and surely within a few weeks one by one was dropping.. I believe they were sick from the beginning. I don't think they had Marek's disease because of the way they died. I beleive it was a respiratory issues. the one that I have left is doing GREAT. She has a crooked crown though. LOL I call her Elean... because of the leaning of her crown. LOL BIG girl. The rooster was even BIGGER. mean boy you turned your back on him he would ATTACK. LOL but they are soo Awesome.

We have a fairly mean BCM roo, I was actually nervous to set his eggs, and it's why I bought eggs from the lady I got chicks from last year. She has 2 new roos who are sweeties, so I'm trying again.

He only attacks my husband and he does a good job of protecting the girls. He saved the flock from a large coyote the other day - sounded the alarm and when I went and looked out a large coyote was standing not 5 feet from him and the flock and just a few feet from our kids' trampoline, which is in the grass closest to the house - so the darn thing was staring at me from about 30 feet away maybe. I yelled at it and ran down there and then I headed down the hill to the back of our property - it was hanging out there in a dip in the hill. I had to chase it off. One of our dogs was inside with me and the other was on the other side of the house at the time - she should have noticed and chased it off, lazy butt. Too busy chasing birds. I haven't seen it back but I'm sure it will be. I need to get the gun handy, but they're in the safe as we have small children. Oh, it was broad daylight, I think just before 5pm here.

Okay folks, I need some insight on what is going wrong, what to do now and what to do better next time. I ran a low humidity until lockdown and since then it's been high, maybe too high for too long. I have chicks zipping and then stopping. I assisted one this morning and 30 mins ago another one. Glad I did on both. This last one was pushing but was stuck - the membrane was attached in several places still and on one side it has pushed its foot through it and it was stuck, so it was stuck and had no leverage. I cut the membrane a little, and especially around the foot and it looks good. I was afraid it would be gluey so I gave it a quick bath and put it back to dry and fluff out. The two that I took out a couple of hours ago look ok, but they were a bit matted, I gave them wipe downs and a gentle blow dry before putting in the brooder. Can anyone tell me why this is happening and what to do about it? I still have 7-8 eggs to go.

ps: I think it's clear I'm on Amy Lynn's team, though I forget at the moment what color that is. I can't see me not helping a fully formed chick who is trying to survive, to get out of the shell- especially if it's something I did to cause it.

Sorry Jules, its been a busy day for me.

I have the Octagon Advance with pump, and love it.

I have only had 2 chicks that started zipping and wouldn't finish. The first, I didn't catch it, and it died. The second was in my previous to the last hatch. I don't know why they do that, except this last one, I suspect was because it was active early, and made quite a big hole to begin with, and the membrane dried around the hole and stuck to a few feathers. It had gotten rolled by another chick, so maybe that had something to do with it. Or maybe it was already too dry inside and it just got stuck.

Its also possible for deformities to cause them to be able to pip and start, but not be able to rotate and finish. Like leg issues and such.

Just a few observations... I'm sure others will have more.

I don't have the Advance but I have an Eco and I love it to death. So much so that part of my tax return might be buying me an Eco 40 and my 20 will retire to a hatcher - unless I manage to overstuff the 40 like I have managed to do with the 20 spectacularly this week. Somehow I need to get 29 duck eggs and 12+ chicken eggs in there. Wish me luck because I'm going to need it It'll thin out once I can do candling in a few days and see what developing but until then I'm gonna have to get really creative since I loaned out my other incubator and have nowhere else to put these.
