My first ever shipped eggs! Call ducks!

Awesome!! I was so nervous with this hatch of calls. I have 6 more call eggs on day 9. I will be here for you if you need any help. Ravyn had to hold my hand the whole hatch!

Good luck!!!!

So first hatch is over!!! 9/14 hatched. 3 of which were shipped and the remainder were my SLP. So one came out looking like a GLP!!!! So I am super excited to see it start feathering out! So with my 3 shipped eggs that hatched out of 4.....well that's 75%!!!!!

So the Silkie batch is doing great. Candled today which is day 15 and I still have 14 going strong!!! My 2 SLP I threw in for good measure are also growing strong. So Monday I will be locking down 16 total if day 18 candle looks good. :fl. I can't believe I made it this far with all these Silkies!!!!

That's great!! So cute. Can't wait for the silkies to hatch!

Thanks... sinus infection, gotta love allergies, and looks like strep... :sick

No rest for the wicked though, lol... all these babies keeping me busy...

Hope you feel better. Allergies are bad here too. Had to start my son on meds.
Here's one before I assisted:

Those may be the 2 with bad legs, for sure the second one.

Here's the one that died before I started assisting.

And here's a basket of cuteness to cheer you up after that last one:

Results: 32 set originally, 8 infertile. 24 viable eggs, removed 2 early quitters on day 14 candling. 22 went into lock down and 19 hatched. 6 went to sickbay, some to strengthen up since they were assists and needed a bath. Three of those are now with the rest in the main brooder. Of the 3 in sick bayesterday, one has crooked neck and two have legs problems. Treating with Nutri Drench, vitamin E, Selenium and yogurt. The legs have been hobbled and feet taped to give support and spread out toes. The one I thought would die, picture is second above, has perked up and could get legs almost under it before hobbling. We'll see how they are tomorrow.

So, 16 healthy chicks. 19/24 hatched, first time and with all these problems, 79% ain't too shabby.

Well you did a great job! The leg problems could be from a difficult hatch. ive read that leg problems are more common when they have trouble zipping. Some of Those zips are not normal patterns. I'm not sure why, though.

How does the air cells look????  That's a LOT OF BABIES

Air cells are in rough shape, as expected, 17 are detached to some degree, half of those were full rollers. I wasn't posting for help, only out of excitement.

And Nah, two doz is minimal. I have 60 set n the other bator, and this is only a quarter of what K has set... I've hatched almost 200 since I started 6 months ago.

:hugs thanks! I'm just following average protocol, I've only watched you all discuss it about 100xs :) 7 still have attached ACs so I'm sort of excited for them! Okay, more than sort of

I am madly in love this with little call that hatched!! My first time for ducks. So I know you know how intriguing they are to watch. Don't lose hope on the detached. This duckling had a fully rolling air cell! You'll do fine!

Oh, that sucks. Toothaches and sinus infections are the worst in my book. Hope you feel better soon!

Low humidity for sticky babies?? if anything they would shrink wrap
There is a thread on here that describes 2 kinds of "sticky babies" wet and sticky being from high humidity and just plain sticky w/o the excess wetness being from low humidity.

Ive never sprayed a chicken egg but yes on ducks. I strongly believe there could be a number of other factors that can cause a bad hatching such as, location, a lot of Rain in your area I could go on and on.

I believe there are soo many small minor issues that can relate to having a failed hatching that its not always one sided and one thing.

The best thing to do is to try and narrow down the major issue..
It's the narrowing down that can be the hard part.

HovaBator 1602N with fan kit made for it and egg turner (before lockdown). Air cells looked good, as far as I could tell for first time. Temps were in range - once or twice I saw it get to 100.6 or 100.8 very briefly and then back down. Temps were usually 99.5-100, may shoot for 99.0-99.5 next time? There didn't seem to be any excess fluid except in one - I forget which one. It may have been one of the 2 I have that have leg problems.

I had this happen to a couple. I cut them so they wouldn't pull out or cause bleeding - there was already some bleeding on those 2, not much.
I cut mine too.

You can see there's a problem with the membranes becoming dry by the amount of brown on them. That second zip looks like the chicks was in bad position as it was going down instead of around. End results are adorable though!

I'm so glad he hatched for you!

Have to ask other than raising the humidity how can a lot of rain affect the hatch .? don't put a lot of time in monitoring heat and humidity. throw in the eggs turn it on and see how it comes out . If lower heat is one of the causes of insufficient fluid loss during incubation then I'm about to have a bunch of sticky chicks. Have to say it is nice when you do one thing and things get better . but of course the next set it all goes south again .

I wish I knew. Our hatches are all over the place lately, too. Trying to pinpoint what the problem is has been a challenge. I feel ya.

I have life! I candled a couple of my WH eggs really quick last night just for fun and I could see faint embryos. I'll do the real first candling tomorrow night when they should be big enough to easily see. But I'm super excited!

Also my cemanis started laying - right now while I have no rooster in with them :barnie My new roosters should be quarantined for one more week but it's so tempting to just add them to the coop, sigh. I got them from someone here on BYC so I'd like to believe they're fine but you just never know for sure.

I always quarantine no matter what!!! I want to protect my flock as much as possible!
