Shipping and Receiving Pea eggs contest!

Trying to putt pictures of the eggs frenchblackcopper sent me right now...they are still a little too young to tell if they are fertile or not. Thanks again frenchblackcopper!

Judyc,,,Lafayette Indiana is only about a 45 minute drive from here,,,be about as cheap to drive here and get the eggs and have a much higher hatch rate, yes? I have IB eggs in the bator now,,havn't candled them yet but in another week I should know if the boys are working in that pen,or just trying to see who's King of the pen.Your more than welcome to make the trip here,,cost is only 1 loaf of white bread,or two bags of microwavable popcorn,my peas are addicted to it,,jk!!
jk, I'd love to make the trip! Didn't realize you were so close! I think I can stand the cost, lol. It will be another week before I can drive, though. (si joint fusion) Pm me with directions?

There has to be others here at BYC that are shipping-receiving pea eggs?the season don't last for eternity,,only a few more months and we're finished for the year. Come on,stick you necks out on the chopping block and show your packing techniques and then let everyone know the end results!! We may be adding a shipment to Wa State on this,,I'm a little anxious, yet reserved what the hatch rate will be.But if they do good we will have the tools that will be useful when possibly shipping very, very long distances.

I just mailed my first package monday... but I didn't have my camera when I was packing it up. I will try to remember on Monday when I ship another few eggs. I wouldn't post for a contest, but I'll post for results. The person I sent it to agreed to take pictures for me when it arrives.

1) Sorry, no pic! Shipped it in a USPS flatrate box with newspaper.

2) 4 eggs from a mixed pen of peas.

3) USPS for the carrier, I shipped it 6/4 and they probably left 6/5. Expecting delivery today, 6/7.

4) Shipped it to Kansas, from Michigan.

5) The cost was $12.10, and that includes delivery confirmation/tracking number. Since it's flatrate (doesn't matter the weight, "if it fits, it ships" box), no weight was recorded.

As a buyer not a seller I sure would be interested in hatch rates, with the factors of shipping. I receive my first e-bay shipped eggs tomorrow or Saturday. I'm sure interested in how many shipped eggs actually do hatch. I agree that as a buyer I am going to do everything I can to assure the eggs hatch. They are expensive when you want a specific color. I checked with local hatcheries. They offer peachicks but you don't get an actual choice of what kind you get or you have to order a minimum of 8 peachicks. I want a certain color or colors. I asked about eggs they'll try to give you your request but no guarentee again. So I go to e-bay. My shipped eggs, to late to ask seller to participate, but I will take pictures, give milage of shipment, carrier and hatch rate if you like, just for a record.
To let you know I did buy 8 eggs from a hatchery I was allowed to pick them up, awesome very clean hatchery. Brought home, plans watch temp add water wait like a first time mom on her baby/ies. Second night our electricity went off. I don't know for how long, but I was sick. I am still incubating like this didn't happen. Candled egg 8th day they have good airsack and darkened like a chicken egg at that stage. I couldn't see veins but eggs are darker and some speckling so I hope they are harder to see. I am waiting with a heavy heart and guarded expectations of a good hatch.
If you would like me to participate in your survey let me know. Lil Zoo

Lil Zoo,thats what this thread is all about. What packing techniques works best,,over what distances eggs travels with an acceptable hatch rate,,yes, please upload info here. I have several BYC'ers wanting eggs and to participate, but I didn't start this thread for me.I do hope the BYC'er from Wa State decides 2 day shipping isn't cost prohibitive,,because if we could get a 75% or better hatch rate for that distance,it may be a record, and I have faith in my birds from incubating and hatching that I know they are doing their job as far as fertilization goes,,at least 85%.I think thats acceptable since most of my birds(2/3) were hatched here 2 years ago,and this is their first breeding year,Granted,I bit the bullet hard at Mt Hope and came home with 7 auction birds, and 4 birds bought beforehand and picked up on the way there, then buying a beautiful Black Shoulder Silver Pied Quad from Bigcreekpoultry about 3 weeks ago,, but they too had to settle into a new place, and getting used to my ugly mugg each day.Next year has to be smoother here,Pea Palace East edition is complted now,,wasn't when I came back from Mt Hope in March.
Anyone here that is shipping or recieving eggs can do this,,even if one party doesn't participate,,you can get the facts on distance and hatch rates and report here.

Awesome will take pictures when they arrive never belonged to a forum before so may have to ask how to post the pictures. Can I add that I love the antispation of incubating eggs and having fun with my granddaughters, but my main goal was to have two or three peacocks to roam during the day on my acreage for their beauty alone then shed them at night. At this point I don't care about peahens or breeding peafowl I read somewhere that there are 4-6 peahens hatched to one male. Can you tell me is this true?

My ratio from the past two years of hatching was about 2/3 hens-1/3 males in 2010,,and about 50/50 last year.I'd gladly settle for a 5-6 hen to 1 cock ratio. But selling wise,,for the same care and 3 years of expense males are worth diuble the $$

I understand most people would be real happy with that ratio as one cock can take care of 5-6 hens is my understanding.

Ok I got my eggs this morning. Eggs came from Oswego, KS. E-bay listed milage at 380 miles. I just ran it on Mapquest and it said 449 miles to Wellman, Iowa. Being it came thru Des Moines distrubution it would of been 500 at least. They came USPS. Shipped June 6th arrived June 8th. Eggs were not broken or cracked took pictures will try to insert them. Candled----- 2 eggs air sac has floating spot in it. Have set small end down for rest period. Ok for packing. 6 eggs wrapped in damp paper towels first. 2nd Completly inclosed in bubble wrap (heard this is not good) remember I am an amature. then placed in shreaded paper. Bubble wrap lined the box. This box was placed tightly in another box of almost identical size, nothing between.

I marked 2 eggs with A because airsack wasn't normal. Ok I had planned to put 3 eggs under brooding chicken and 3 in incubator. What is your recommendation. Put all six under chicken. Rather I tried all 6 in incubator. Or do the split?

I will also add some facts about shippers which can make shipper not matter. Lil Zoo

How you decide to incubate them is up to you of course,,electrical power outages occur and can ruin whats inside an incubator,,and a broody hen can give up or get scared off anytime while setting,,if they are dedicated broodies I would let them have a try.I've never got eggs wrapped in damp paper towels,,anyone else?? Your eggs with the air sacks moving may be better off in a bator with the air sack up for several days and not in a turner,I've never had one of these eggs hatch before,,no matter what I've tried or how long it sat before being incubated.
