I am so so sorry for your loss. I almost lost my dominique girl that way last year. Luckily I got to her in time and the obstruction was small and flexible....so olive oil and throat massages for a couple of days and she worked it out.
same thing happened to my best ameraucana hen yesterday. I was right next door ten feet away feeding and cleaning in a pen, and she suddenly squawks, runs about three feet and jams her head between two water buckets and starts the death throes. I have NO IDEA what set her off. They were just minding their business, doing chicken stuff, and she just up and keeled over right in front of me. I have two blue babies out of her, a boy and a girl, split to lavender, to remember her by, but nothing else. SO sad. Sorry for your loss too. I was glad I was there to see it or i'd have been worried sick about it otherwise. Yesterday was the first hot day after a cool spell, but none of the birds looked distressed, just maybe panting a little.... Still puzzled. RIP my beautiful little lady.
It is going to be a harsh summer...so far my girls are doing all right despite of the heat. I'm doing everything I can to make them comfy. If they die suddenly, I would know they had a good life and there isn't much I can do to help them if they aren't aware of the heat danger signals. Sometimes birds are so dumb to realize that there are Gatorade in the water for them to drink and they don't drink often to make it worthwhile.
Been giving them cantaloupe and melons. They seems to enjoy it.

So sorry about your hen! It's just such a weird experience, I'm still numb as you must be. Gosh, I only have one precious ameraucana - I hope she stays healthy because I would miss her terribly.
