Shocking Food Industry Secrets

Oh no... now you can't be using wheat bread.. that at least appears healthy... gotta go with the store brand of white... and that's 88 cents. 100% agree... the cheap stuff ... GAH... well if you wanted the recipe for a spare tire... that's where I'd start...

And thanks Nonseq... we LOVE burritos in this house... been getting the canned Organics pinto/black beans and going from there, but I like this idea MUCH better!! Thank You Thank You! Also good for throwing into a soup too I bet!

I agree with that too. We both work full time, but having non-genetically modified foods is important to us. Next February I am going to take on the task of raised beds (because our dirt is hard as a rock - need a jackhammer to dig a hole) and planting our own vegetables. Most groceries stores here carry more local fruits than veggies. I have never planted a danged thing before except a foot up a teenagers behind, so I will be on the Easy Garden ALOT more.

did it grow?

One thing I tell my clients if they are new to planting seeds. don't plant them too deep. A seed should be only planted the depth of the size of seed sideways. so if the seed in 1/4 laying flat, plant it a 1/4 deep.
Some clients plant the seed so deep I think it comes up in China because it doesn't come up on this side of the planet. Then they think they bought stale seed.
Poor seeds, they run out of steam and die trying to get to the surface.

See I never knew that. I plan on seeking as much information as possible before I start. I know where I live any and all crops have to be netted. Ravens are a real problem here.

In many countries, fast food/processed food is much more expensive than natural, fresh food. I've been to Indonesia for example, and people buy fresh meat, fish, veggies, fruit, etc., as they need it. For one thing, there are many local markets where things like that are available, not so much here. My mother in law doesn't even own a can opener, they have no microwave, and the food I eat there is the most delicious food I've ever eaten. Anything sweet is sweetened with natural cane sugar, no such thing as artificial sweeteners, diet sodas, nothing like that.
You can feed a family of 4 easily, for less than the cost of a meal at a fast food restaurant. lol, I'm making myself miss being there right now.
Here in the U.S., we try to eat as healthy and natural as possible. Haven't been to a fast food restaurant in close to a year. Sometimes eat in restaurants, but eat most meals at home, using fresh, natural ingredients.
this is one of the reasons for raising chickens, home gardening etc. Aside from the health benefits, we're heading into a time where prices are getting so high, you'd be insane not to raise/grow your own food.

OHH thanks Bart... bet that's been the reason behind at least SOME of my failures.

I'm hoping to do more planting in spring myself... though goodness knows how it'll go with my brownish-black (rather than green) thumb.

What's something that's idiot proof?

Excellent! We love green beans... bit of onion... FABULOUS! Thanks Bart!
How many would you recommend planting... family of four... can freeze/can some?

Had another thought... if I'm making up beans and freezing why don't I just go ahead and "refry" them and THEN freeze them? Is there any reason that wouldn't work? Have some whole, for serving with rice and cornbread... and some for soups... and some for burritos??

Whatcha think?

Also, any word on the rice question? That doesn't take NEAR the time of beans, but still, defrost and go IS nice. Especially on karate days... class runs 4:30-5:30 and DH gets home at 5:30-6... usually like supper around then... easy/quick stuff is GREAT on those days.
