if i were to get an order of all modern games and old english games from ideal poultry, and wanted their combs dubbed, should i have it done to them as chicks? they provide that as a special service but it seems like it would be hard to do since it is so small? what is everyones expierience on this?

They don't need to be dubbed. The only reason to dub them is if you're fighting them or you want to show them. I doubt you'll show them if they're hatchery stock and I hope you're not fighting them.

Personally I think debeaking and dubbing is cruel and should not be done BUT if I were going to do such things I would do it at the earliest possible time so that maybe just maybe the nerves have not formed enough to cause the bird as much pain. Can you imagine having your ear chopped off? Dubbing to me is about the same thing.

Until this post I thought dubbing was only done for fighting. Why would you want to dub them for show?

(I don't know much about showing birds but love to learn)

Some breeds are required to be dubbed for showing. Just like some dog breeds have to have their ears cropped or their tails bobbed. Stupid rules, but that's the way it is...

I just re-read my post and I hope that I did not come off like I was attacking. I didn't mean it that way. I now have something new to look up and learn about but I still don't think I would do it.

You would think if you were showing a certain breed they would want to see the bird in its natural unaltered state. If you altered any other bird they would DQ you in a second. Wouldn't they?

I agree, this would make sense, and I suspect you are right, that they usually want to see the chicken in its natural state, other than noninvasive things like clipping toenails or bathing or whatever. But this is not how it works for games, as I understand it.

I didn't have any interest in showing, anyway, but when I read that games must be dubbed, I knew it was not something I would ever do.

Not gonna declaw a cat or alter a dog's ears or tail, either.

I do get that you were trying to learn about this. Glad you were. No problem.

It's best to wait till they are older to dub them. You want the comb and wattles to be almost fully devoloped so it doesn't grow out and look bad in the show pen.

Another reason for dubbing is to prevent frozen combs and wattles in the winter time.

One reason I like my vet is that he won't put an animal under anaesthesia just to crop a tail or do whatever they do to ears. He'll do it during spaying or neutering, but only then.
