Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Did you notice your thread has reached 100 pages?

It's definitely my favorite and the first I look for. Where else can you find poetry and pie recipes? Say hi to Roger!

it's my favorite thread too...

I got my "egg scale", the double yolker might have come in at large... most of them are small or just slightly above towards medium, but not quite. I still have the very first BR cream color egg. it measures "Pee Wee" lol

work has been so hectic for me as well... and it's definitely interfering in my verse writing!

oh well... I've been saying for years that I'm off to earn kibble $, now it's kibble and crumble $$

I wish everything wasn't so expensive though, like gas, (sheesh! we're in California

) and pumpkins too. The cheapest I can find a decent sized pumpkin is $3, and they're all thick and old and dried out. Tried to grow some this year, but I think it is too hot here or they don't like the soil or something, because no luck, again.

The chickens are happy as long as they get something special. Got eggplant and chopped kale pie yesterday. These things grow great around here, but no one really likes them except the chickens! Yay for them. Still getting about 6 eggs per day (8 possible), so the girls are pulling their weight.

Cheeka, I just read a post that said feeding peanuts will increase egg size. Ever heard of that? The biggest egg we get is from the white leghorn, the rest are just in the large to medium range. That's fine for us, just add an extra when baking.

I think I will ask for an egg scale for Christmas!

oooh, i feed peanut hearts fairly regularly... Blu's green egg from today weighed in at almost large!
Violet has been in and out of the nest box all afternoon, I'm sure she is trying to lay an egg, Si ventured in many times as well, hopefully to offer encouragement, but most likely to see if he could get himself a little without Royce to drive him off...
When I put them all back, Si stayed in the enclosure ~ with Royce ~ and for the first, I'd say... 5 minutes, Royce didn't seem to care, kept looking at me... Si kept looking through the fencing at the portable run, where he belongs, and seemed to be trying to figure if there was any way of getting over there from inside the enclosure. another 5 minutes later and I think Royce had about had enough of Si's presence so, I got him out before tempers flared. it was a cool experiment tho', gave me a flicker of hope that I can keep all 3 of the boys in the long run without too much difficulty...
The girls laid 4 today, with maybe a 5th from Violet sometime this evening... Isis is squatting like a pro as well, and she only started squatting yesterday!
it's such a cute little scale, no batteries required... you can find vintage ones just like this on ebay and amazon, some are a lot more expensive, but are basically the same.
someone had posted the info for this one on another thread, and it was the best price by about $5 - $40 depending on where... and the shipping was included. it was 34.95 +tx (i think), (no price on the invoice)
Seattle Farm Supply was the seller, their supplier is Nasco Modesto... the lighting in my kitchen is terrible

Hey wishing you might want to try Waltham butternut if its for the chickens and you have a hard time with pumpkins that or Amish pie pumpkins...small but I find they are easier to grow. You can usually toss those seeds right into a compost pile and they just do the work themselves....I've got plenty of butternut this year. I did have an issue with pumpkins of the giant variety because of bad squash bugs this year. If you want to try again next year I could even send you some seeds that might work for you. Pumpkins are supposed to be easy to grow they just take up a huge amount of space in the large variety. I grow some ornamentals in containers some years. I'm excited for next spring to be able to grow for these little ones. I even kept some small cabbage in the garden for them to have as treats this winter. I had a watermelon sitting here but forgot that they aren't supposed to have treats so young.....guess pie will wait for next year for the girls.

It's been 8 days since I got my new hens. Not an egg since.

They are probably too freaked out to lay! The slightest little thing seems to cause a great deal of stress. Today I only got 3 eggs! but I know why. I winterized the roosting house by adding a layer of lovely, clean sand over the vinyl flooring. (It's been bare all summer, but so hot and arid that the poop dried quickly and I just swept it out. Not so hot anymore

so needed a new system for cooler weather and decided to turn the whole thing into a giant litter box.) Well, it seems the girls do not approve of the changes and they refused to go in the coop all day until darkness forced them in. Since only 3 girls laid before I started my afternoon clean out, I think the others, who wouldn't even go inside to get to the nest boxes, will be laying first thing in the morning!

Change is For the Birds!
We're suspicious of these changes, Mom! What did you do? What is this soft stuff? Where is our poo?
This sand stuff shifts and it moves all around. Why can't we walk on some hard, solid ground?
Inside the coop it smells nice and clean, but why is it different? You're being so mean!
You showed us and you told us that it's safe inside, but it's really very strange and we're suspecting that you lied.
What if there are monsters lurking down below? What if we start sinking? Please don't make us go!
We're not going in there! We'll stay outside instead. But it's getting dark and scary and we want to go to bed.
So.... we'll use the roosts for sleeping, and the nest boxes to sit, but we're not walking on that floor 'cause we don't like it, not one bit!!!
